Update: After Round 2, Game 2, no movement in standings as everyone had LMU as a winner, no one had anything close to 174 total points, and only 1 person (Midwest) got anywhere close to margin of victory – earning just one point
Losing Williams is significant, makes GU’s road to the finals a little easier.
That said, Ryan Beasley appears to be past the injury that slowed him early in the season and has played well the past month+ and can be an electric scorer/shooter……they’ll need it out him if the Dons hope to advance to Finals.
Any reason you want OSU, @92bronc ? I would think that a Pepperdine upset would lead to a better matchup for SCU. The Waves would have some tired legs and don’t play a physical game that could wipe the Broncos out before having to matchup with the Gaels.
But yes, Pepp is probably the better matchup for the Broncos because of the ‘legs’ variable and OSU simply has more overall talent and we struggled against them. But if Odum plays the way he did vs. Portland he could give us trouble….our defense is mediocre defending good pt.guards (ie- Nembhard) and especially in pic/roll which is partly where Odum carved up Portland.
I’m willing to give up whatever nonexistent chances I have in the contest in exchange for a Waves upset over the Beavers tonight. All for the greater good, of course.
The other question is who of LMU, Wazzu, and USF has the better chance of beating the Zags (slim though those chances are). I gotta think that USF is basically toast without Williams and maybe without Beasley as well. LMU would be playing their fourth straight night, and I can’t see them continuing to score 100 each night. I guess that leaves Wazzu as having the best shot, even though their roster is so thin. So maybe I’m a Cougar fan despite my upset prediction.
Talent-wise (sans Williams & Beasley) and rest-wise, I think USF would still be the best bet to beat Gonzaga. Beasley has only started one game this season, averaging 24 minutes/game and 7.7 points/game. both ranking 6th on the team. I think they can backfill those minutes and points.
The bigger issue is Williams. He is technically the point guard, though I’m not so confident that Thomas and others can handle that role.
If I were coaching USF’s opponent, I’d try early on to full- or 3/4-court press to see how they handle it without Williams.
I think Pepp is the most dangerous team from the lower (below SCU) seeds. They are on fire. With the way the Waves are playing right now, I’m not sure our defense is a good match for their offense. The question (if they win) will be whether or not they have the legs to play well 3 nights in a row.
Pepp is terrible… i just hope they hold on. Way easier to trounce them than OSU.
Don’t be fooled by their win over Port, or their good shooting tonight. They stink.
For what its worth with 10 mins left down 8, I bet OSU still wins this.
