Usual disclaimers on scrimmage results. I’d like for SCU to rock Cal even in a scrimmage, but staying close while not starting (not playing?) Darlan but rather starting Graves (first D1 minutes), Bukky (barely played last season), and Hammond (off a redshirt) gives reason to be optimistic. No Tadjo and Normand certainly hurts as well.
It would be nice if some description of the scrimmage leaks out as well, but I don’t see a clear cause for alarm–USF also “lost” to Stanford last week.
The obvious questions….did Knapper and Darlan play???
If they did, a bit surprising to see Hammond or Knapper. And would make me question if Darlan is struggling to pick up the offensive and defensive schemes.
BK is nursing an elbow injury. Fell hard on it during practice. Darlan played but from what I heard he was playing off the ball
Heard Broncos struggled with turnovers and missed free throws
Just listened to the WCC Preview podcast. When asked about Darlan, Sendek mentions ‘transition’ and ‘adjustment’. Between that and not starting vs. Cal seems to confirm he may be struggling to get comfortable with the system and finding his role.
You can sort of see anything you want out of a lot of these scrimmages if you squint enough. Cal is picked about where SCU is for the preseason, maybe slightly higher. Being competitive with one starter and two likely rotation guys not playing may be a good sign. Alternatively, it’s Cal, and the ultimate hope of SCU is to not lost to Cal generally in MBB–a team that loses to Cal is not likely NCAA-bound.
USF “lost” their second scrimmage to Utah State on the Hilltop. You can piece some of the info together at the USF forum and here:
It sounds like Wang is making a leap, and Beasley and Riley remain very strong. But USF also needs to clean up quite a bit before the games start counting.
Perhaps more interesting: SMC beat Ole Miss by 15 in their second scrimmage down in Mississippi and out-rebounded the Rebels by 20.
