25-26 Around the WCC (and beyond)

Gonzaga is destroying Kentucky @Kentucky up 30 with 10 minutes left…..

I believe it’s a neutral site game in Nashville…

X looking good. Hard to reconcile that we went in there and beat them like a drum…

Interesting game tonight with USD hosting the USC Trojans in the Slim Gym. Lavin’s Toreros are pretty rudderless. But they seem to have one game every year where they do something unexpected. Would be pretty fun if they can beat a good USC team, but I will absolutely not hold my breath.

Meanwhile, a concerning report from ESPN about USF and sports betting.

NCAA: Ex-San Francisco player shared info with bettor

As I recall, we all wondered about this when he was suspended. There were rumors in this direction. Unfortunate situation.

Their board is having a mini-meltdown and all Marcus Williams threads are now locked. Unfortunate situation for usf.

Today ends the Finals Week lull across the sport. Over the next two days, there are a few really big WCC games:

Today:

  • UCLA vs. Gonzaga in Seattle
  • USF at Saint Louis

Tomorrow:

  • SMC vs. Boise State in Idaho Falls
  • Wazzu at USC

Of the smaller draw games that still have interest are Montana State at OSU (about to start) Kent State (9-1) at Portland (tomorrow). The former game is the sort of game that the Beavers should absolutely win but definitely might not given their spectacular decline. Kent State is a very good mid-major squad that will be favored by double digits at Portland. Can Shantay’s team rise to the occasion and defend their home floor?

Todd Golden must be loving having this kid on the court:

Seattle U beats Washington in Climate Pledge. It’s the second straight win over Seattle’s cross-town rival. Pretty cool and great for the conference. Not so great for SCU that the Broncos won’t make that trip this year.

Winning in Seattle will be worth something this season. Winning in Pullman will not be.

Oh and USD beats UCSD on a last second, off-balance, banked heave from 3P. USD is still quite bad. But every win counts before it all becomes basically zero-sum in conference play.

Northern Iowa in a dogfight with SMC in Moraga. 55-51 Gaels with 5:50 left.

It’s a joy watching two quality defenses duke it out.

Look at these numbers. Gaels struggled shooting (didn’t make a FG in final 7 minutes of the game when they were up 51-50), but were just tenacious on D and nearly perfect at the FT line.

Bennett is a great coach.

Our game this afternoon plus USF @ Seattle (Seattle favored -2.5) this evening are the most interesting and consequential games featuring mid to upper middle teams striving to compete near the top of the league.

Other games today: GU is favored by 25 at Pepperdine. SMC is favored by ~10 @ LMU. WSU is playing Portland and is up 5 in the 1st half as I type. And Pacific @ USD features two likely bottom dwellers.

Gonzaga only beats USD by 6. 99-93
Oregon State 70 USF 62.
St. Marys 72 Pepperdine 45
Seattle U 69 - Washington State 55
LMU 80 - Pacific 71

Impossible to tell who to root for or against yet but any night we pick up a game on the Dons is a good night.

Wow, the Toreros put up a fight!

Nice to see USF lose to a team the Broncos just squashed.

Tonight SCU was not the only team still in the Christmas spirit that decided to spot their opponents 80+ points. Very generous of those Zags.

Loyola Chicago just knocked off Rhode Island at Rhode Island. LUC is clearly much more talented than their early season results.

The best thing for Santa Clara at this point is for the Ramblers to go on an unbelievable tear in A-10 play. It’s a huge hurdle, but if Loyola can get to the top-200 (that will require, again, an absolutely monstrous run in conference), it flips SCU’s loss to Q3 which looks much, much better. Still bad. But not ruinous.
