Game 1: Eastern Washington

Yep. EWU is Shantay Legans’ former program. Current EWU coach David Riley was an assistant under Legans for the duration of Legans tenure at EWU. They’re running the same or similar system that Legans took with him to Portland…inverted offense, biggish guards posting up, forwards like Venters who are skilled and dangerous from beyond the 3 (fortunately for us he was in foul trouble), and yes some unique sets running defenders through multiple staggered screens. The concern is, there will be other teams who run similar systems (including Portland) that we’ll have to defend but with better talent than EWU.
The good thing is, it is early, and it was a good experience for our guys to defend against EWU’s relatively well run and challenging system compared to say a vanilla motion O. And with several new faces plus a young Stewart playing a bigger role, communication and cohesion will be a work in progress until these guys get more experience playing with each other.
