Game 4: @ Nevada

I really do think Herb is coaching for his life at this point. Or should be, anyways. There’s no denying that he brought SCU up a step. There’s also no denying that he has underperformed his talent for going on 4 straight years.

One aspect that may go under the radar is new AD Heather Owen and what she wants

For all we know she may not want to hitch her wagon to a coaching regime that has all the media heads saying set your stock on fire. But that’s purely speculation and hard to balance enjoying 20 win years and setting yourself back further

I really don’t know what we have this season. It’s not as if this roster is young and inexperienced, quite the opposite.
We were never in this game and four games in, there truly needs to be some self reflection amongst players and coaches. Fundamentals, execution, mental mistakes…We flat out stink!

When you look at Coach Sendek’s coaching career, it has a very similar profile. 8-10 years at NC State, ASU and now SCU.
Wins a lot of games, no league titles, Got to NIT’s and NCAA’s cause the conferences were much better than the WCC.
He got fired because he couldn’t beat North Carolina or Duke as well as Arizona and UCLA in the PAC 12.
Sound familiar?
We win more games but can’t beat Gonzaga, St. Mary’s and lately USF.
This record doesn’t translate to the WCC either.
If you want conference titles and NCAA’s from the WCC - probably not him.

Frustrating. Cam fouled out with only TWO legit fouls. That said - He needs to hit FT since they are the ONLY offensive opportunity he’s gonna get. Playing out of position in sacrificial role is NOT what I had in mind when convinced to stay.

As for the team. We play a flat perimeter game. Our shooters are all nonexistent. Imagine if they start making shots?

We really need to swap to a new offense and run a press defense. Or plan to lose a whole lot more.

This is not what I was expecting of Broncos based on off season hype

Not worth the time to break down the why and how and stats of this game…it was a cesspool of bad basketball for the Broncos, the score speaks for itself.

But grasping for a few positives:

  • Mahi put up 22pts on efficient shooting, granted several buckets were during late 2nd half garbage time but he was one of the few Broncos who showed up. He’s been the Bronco’s best and most consistent offensive player so far this season, including the leading scorer even though Bal has played significantly more minutes. Hopefully Mahi’s minutes continue to increase, he deserves to be playing 28-30 mins a game.
  • Oboye showed some promise, had 4 pts and 2 blocks and altered at least another shot or two. Not sure he’s ready for a significant role this season but he’s an intriguing prospect. You can’t teach his size and length, it can alter the game and be a real asset. He’s reasonably coordinated for a guy his size and has some shooting touch. The concern is the lack of mass and strength; I would be worried about playing him vs. the more physical and skilled posts such as GU’s Ike.
