Herb was hired in 2016 for 6 years . He was extended at some point - anybody know his contract end date ???
Believe he has two years left. Prior to the Pepperdine game I heard there was talk of extending him. Would have to believe the loss changes the thinking on the extension.
He’s never going to us to the dance
No way this loss changes anything. Our new AD loves Sendek. Our U doesn’t have the courage to make these type of changes. Amazingly Stanford where our AD is from was not afraid and made big moves and it’s why we’ll be stalled in the 4th place middle fiddle…Unless Bronco fans and Donors speak up we’re stuck.
Whatever we think about Sendek, I wouldn’t go painting the Stanford Athletic Department as ruthlessly bent on success in basketball. Haase underachieved waaaaaay worse than Sendek has. Haase was bringing in 4 and 5 star players almost every year and went to the NIT once in eight seasons.
Pretty sure last time Stanford did anything significant in men’s hoops, Dick Davey was on the bench.
Also, I understand when Carr left for UCSD before this season, it was an acknowledgement that the support to elevate SCU basketball/sports to the next level is non-existent.
Stanford missed every NCAA tournament in Men’s Basketball from 1942 to 1989. That’s a pretty terrible run. With another decade of futility, we can equal it.
Conceding that (1) UCLA had a lot to do with that during a 1-bid per league universe and (2) the Card did just fine from 1990 to about 2015. It’s a relatively unknown fact that Stanford won the 1942 NCAA tournament.
Haase underperformed and as you mention, he was given a very long leash. Many family members, including my wife, went to Stanford, and I tend to root for them, but I just have a hard time with Kyle Smith since he was at USF… I’m a Bronco to the last.
Mike Montgomery went with 30-2 (!!!) with the Card (climbing as high as #2 in the Polls), then retired-ish and went into the AD, came out admin to coach Cal. That guy won a lot of Bay Area hoops games. It can be done.
Bill Carr left because his wife was never leaving San Diego and the team was gonna be terrible. But most importantly he was gonna be fired after this season. He was looking for a parachute and his friend, the UCSD AD, gave him one.
Btw expect an announcement sometime this week of a new women’s basketball coach
With respect to Sendek, I think it’s pretty clear that he can coach here for as long as he wants to continue. I’m not saying that’s a good idea or anything, but I think the Admin like him as a leader and the results are acceptable to the AD.
I think the Admin is content to build a very sold, stable but not top-end remarkable program and keep making incremental upgrades to the budget, roster, etc.
They’ll just keep spinning the roulette wheel until it comes up “NCAA Trip,” or Sendek retires (He’s 62). They had the talent and the schedule to do it this year, but obviously it didn’t work out. Barring some big exodus, it seems like we’ll be about as good next year again, and they’ll just re-run the simulation.
It’s not the worst place to be as a program, but dang if it isn’t a frustrating one… gently tapping on our perpetual glass ceiling.
Also worth pointing out, the departures of Gonzaga, WSU, OSU, and maybe SMC might make SCU a true perennial contender in a one-bid league!
If Pepperdine is still in the conference tournament, we have no chance!
Yeah, the Carr exit felt like he saw the writing on the wall. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think they lost almost everyone from the team the previous year in the portal. That’s not a good sign for a coach.
Nashty is probably right re: Sendek.
seemingly a double confirmation (not that we necessarily needed it) about the new wbb coaching staff
