So it begins…

Thank you for all the hard work, Christian.

He represented the Broncos well.

This is the right take, Nashty!

As much as it saddens me, I am appreciative and realize it’s just the reality of today’s market.

He could always return, but I’d be surprised given what he will command on the open market.

Seinfeld was a savant. We are relegated to cheering for uniforms.

And he was here for three years, plus the summers… he may we be close to finishing an SCU degree, or already done.

He comes from a long line of basketball players - his brother at CU, his dad at LMU, I think a grandpa back in the ABA… I appreciate wanting a chance to see something else, especially for those, like him, who grew up in another region of the country.

Hammond will definitely be missed but I trust the staff at putting a good team on the floor. Replaced all 5 starters last year and it worked out fine. And if it is a complete rebuild then let Cochran and Longcor figure it out in the regular season alongside Ensminger and hope we peak during the conference tournament. Cochran flashed enough during his freshman year to make me think he has an upside similar to Hammond (does not have the float game but does have more length); the question is whether he can make the leap without the benefit of the redshirt year. Longcor allegedly has great feel and is a true facilitator that can also shoot.

I am going to consolidate this thread into a general transfer portal thread since I’m sure there will be lots more news on that front.

Wishing Christian all the success! He really stepped up this year. I too believe in the staff and their ability to recruit.

I wouldn’t be surprised of he planned to leave before the year and him and Sendek had that conversation. Looking at the roster build there are so many guard that they probably anticipated his departure.

Next up! Whose it gonna be?

what percentage of players enter the transfer portal and end up staying at their current school? or does that not happen because they already have non official offers from other schools and know their current school isn’t going to meet the offer?

Bummer…

As has been noted here and on other threads, we lost two players to Power 5 conferences last Spring and things worked out pretty well. In a way, Christian’s development is a selling point for SCU, consistent with the improvement of Tilly, Bryan, JDub and Podz. With Cochran, Longcor and Normand, I think they’ll be fine at 2 as long as too many other dominos don’t fall.

Good luck to Christian he was indeed a Good Bronco.

I’m glad most of you are taking a positive spin on this.

But to me, this just basically relegates us (athletically speaking) to a 4-year JC.

Gonzaga leaving and SMC collapsing is just accelerating the process that NIL and unlimited transfers started.

I’d be willing to bet he goes home to Colorado Boulder to play where his brother played.

I have to hope that we can offer enough in NIL to keep the core and that the players will realize Sendek can develop them in to pro players. If not, then Buckets may be right. Hammond, Bukke, Sasha are must keeps and Graves would be nice to have if he does not go pro. Gotta keep the faith. GO BRONCOS!!!

I don’t think you’re wrong, @Buckets. I think it’s just that we’re finally in a spot where we are putting a fun product on the floor and so I’m trying to look past how much of a bummer it is to lose these guys every year.

If we make the tournament each year, I can live with the system.

If Graves doesn’t go Pro - he won’t be returning to Santa Clara. Expect a few more on the roster to head out the door too. Bukke included - would not surprise me to see him leave.

I would think Graves might fetch 2-3M. There is no way he can come back.

With SMC crashing and burning and Gonzaga leaving the conf. The next few years are Santa Clara’s to grab the conf title and head to NCAA tourney.

It’s too bad that some things can’t be regulated by the NCAA.

For example: You’re allowed one transfer without penalty, a second transfer results in sitting out a year “the old fashioned way”. Some stability and forcing student athletes to seriously contemplate their choices would be a nice change.

Right now, the term “student athlete” at least with college football and basketball seems flimsy at best……just my opinion.

The system should evolve into contract with the option of multi-year agreements. Sure if a kid really wants to transfer to a bigger school, a buyout can be reached. At least the school who developed the player will be compensated and invest in the next talent.
