25-26 Around the WCC (and beyond)

Craig Smith is rumored to be headed to USD. He’s one of those guys who has been very successful at mid-majors but didn’t quite work out at Utah. Should be a good hire if it happens.

STUPID Seattle let the Gaels escape with a win the in emerald city. They almost dumped the Zags in Spokane also but noooo. Thanks for nothing

Yeah. 17 seconds left, down 1 point, and the Redhawks turn the ball over. :man_facepalming:t2:

Watch Dent push off when catching his final inbounds. Absolutely crazy that it was not called a foul.

I was glad SMC escaped…we need them to be a Quad 1 win(s). If they lost to Seattle then lost to Zags and SCU that might not be Q1 anymore

They’ve won 6 of 8, Torvik likes us by 20, they just fired their coach, we just had an emotional let down loss….

This is all the sudden getting really terrifying.

Tinkle is a Spokane native and was high school star here and then at Montana. A friend of mine played against him here in HS and then with him at Montana and is still in contact w/ him and says he’s a solid guy. If he wants to, he’ll land somewhere as a HC, maybe at a Big Sky school for instance. He’s known as a good developer of big men; if he’s willing could be top assistant at a Power Conf school or NBA.

Had some success at OSU including the tourney bid and Elite 8 run in 2021. Unfortunately, they didn’t capitalize on that and followed it up with a very bad 2022 and only 1 win in the PAC. I thought he had one of the most talented squads in the WCC last year outside of GU but underperformed….to illustrate: all 5 starters transferred to and are starting for power conf schools. Should have had more success with that level of talent. And then of course, losing all that talent and experience from last year made for an uphill battle this season. They struggled in non-con but have improved in WCC play and are currently in 4th place…..clearly that improvement wasn’t enough to save his job.

I was told there’s a rumor circulating that Pitt might try to get Sendek to replace Capel. Not sure I put much credence to it but thought I’d pass it along.

Herb doesn’t strike me as a guy who’d leave a program on his own accord

Short of a Final Four or something, I’d be shocked if an ACC program decided that their new direction was hiring a cerebral mid-major coach in his early/mid-sixties. That’s a pretty hard sell for donors and such who always want “fresh.”

The counter is that Pitt may not be all that appealing to a young up and coming coach and thus hard to land them.
The move to the ACC 13 years ago hasn’t been great for them, just one tourney appearance in the last 10yrs…not easy to win in the usually deep ACC making the job a little less appealing.

I doubt Herb is interested in moving back to the East Coast. The grandkids are in Phoenix, his wife basically plays golf everyday. He also has said he wants SCU to be his last coaching job

How Stan Johnson is still around is beyond me.

I thought Schilling had more time considering his faith-based outlook which matters at Pepperdine, plus a chance to recruit to their new facility.

Guess not!

On paper, looks like a good hire

So did Keating. High major assistants need strong vetting on reputation and role within the org. You could get a Jon Scheyer or Tommy Lloyd, but most assistants out there are great role players on a coaching staff but are not capable of leading a program. That said, if you’re Pepperdine, you’ve got to gamble.

Justin Joyner, currently of Michigan but a Randy Bennett disciple, will land a HC job this off-season. And with whispers that Bennett may be headed home to Tempe, Joyner could end up much, much closer than expected otherwise.

The annual “I get my hopes up because Randy Bennett is going to ASU” thread isn’t supposed to be here for at least two more weeks!

Bobby Hurley out after 11 seasons at ASU

I don’t think Bennett leaves for ASU, but it’s probably the strongest likelihood of any move he would make since rumors of him going to Cal like 15+ years ago. He’s from AZ, nearing retirement age, the WCC is entering uncharted waters, and he would be going out on top as the winner of 4 straight WCC regular season titles.

You will hear the wails from Moraga all the way in Mountain View if it does happen though. You can envision life after Few for Gonzaga. It’s much harder with SMC.
