25-26 Around the WCC (and beyond)

Just for History, the last time the Broncos were in 1st place in the WCC was in the 1996-97 season…Where they finished as co champions.

Kind of a wild fact that I read on the Gaels forum and confirmed to be true:

If SMC beats USF tonight, Santa Clara cannot finish lower than the 3 seed in the WCC Tournament.

If USF wins, then SCU will need one more win to secure the 3-seed.

Santa Clara is guaranteed a spot in the quarterfinals in Vegas no matter what now.

Pretty cool.

I think I’d rather USF win the game. We need SMC to get knocked down. The Broncos need that 2 seed.

If SCU can’t win one more game to ensure a 3 seed, then there are bigger problems…

EDIT TO ADD: The Dons don’t look good against the Gaels right now. Down 13 just a minute before halftime.

Pacific has a 1.5 game lead for 4th place over the Dons and Beavs. But it may be a bit of a mirage as UOP has a brutal last four games.

Oregon State is actually in decent position to finish 4th from here with the easiest remaining schedule among the contenders.

USD announced Ty Laur Johnson is leaving the team and entering the transfer portal

Very curious to see where he ends up.

At the end of the year I assume? Or did he bench himself for the rest of the season?

TyLaur didn’t play in USD’s win over Portland last night. Appears he’s gone gone.

USF is taking an absolute beating at the hands of Oregon State.

50-28 at halftime.

OSU shooting 64% FG & 8-13 from 3.

USF shooting 36% FG & 1-13 from 3.

USF has kind of tanked.

Now down 28.

USF will fall to 6-8, unlikely to finish .500 league play.

Herb sucked USF’s life force this season. I’m not sure how else to explain it.

The team stats for the USF-OSU game are wild:

USF now no longer a Q2 Road game.

OSU struggled in non-con and early conference but they’ve improved of late winning 4 of 5 and now sit at 7-7. They’re our final league opponent….won’t be a cakewalk.

Their next three games are Seattle, Pepp, USD. Seattle will be the toughest, if they get past them, they’ll be at 10-7 going in to our game and the likely 4th place team.

Pacific is one game ahead of OSU in the standings, and the Tigers already beat the Beavers twice. Even if Oregon State goes 3-1 (assuming they sweep the teams you mentioned and we beat them in the final game of the regular season), Pacific could go 2-2 (lose to both SMC and GU, and beat USF and Wazzu) and still secure the 4th seed.

Maybe, but not a given Pacific beats either USF or WSU.

A new WCC Unofficial podcast is out. This one features an excellent interview with Dave Smart who was willing to be very candid about the challenges of coaching and player development in the new era. If you can’t handle reliving the recap of the Gonzaga loss, at least skip to the Dave Smart interview and give it a listen.

Great interview. I like Coach Smart’s no-hype conversational approach. He’s not selling a manicured story, he’s sharing his raw thoughts, rough edges and all.

I love how, near the end of the interview, Coach Smart notices that Zach has a Zags hat and an SMC hat on his wall, but doesn’t have a Pacific hat up during an interview with the Pacific coach! Zach, he busted you. I’m sure you have an Amazon Prime subscription, get it delivered, here’s the link: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=university+of+pacific+hat&crid=3UKMQCI9QCVPP&sprefix=university+of+pacific+hat%2Caps%2C203&ref=nb_sb_ss_p13n-expert-pd-ops-ranker_1_25

I think Zach has that tiered bookshelf and moves up and down the Zags/Gaels/Broncos (note the cowbell) to somewhat reflect the standings? If not, he should!
