Around the West Coast Conference

Well the top 5 are settled

  1. SMC
  2. Gonz
  3. USF
  4. SCU
  5. USD (they play pacific so I’m assuming here)
    6/7/8. LMU/Port/Pepp
  6. Pac

We will play sat 3/9 at 7p. If we win, it’s mon 3/11 at 6p against SMC.

Leonard Perry reportedly out at Pacific. They have bumped up one of the assistants to interim for the WCC Tournament. I assume this is because they are trying to get ahead of the HC hiring season, and I believe Pacific has a new AD looking to make his mark. Stoudamire had some fun Pacific teams, and it’s a good school even if Stockton isn’t the greatest town. But then again, neither was Spokane for much of Gonzaga’s run, and UOP could try to be the northern Central Valley’s team with the right investment and coaching staff. Plus, with the Spanos connection, there’s the potential for a pretty good funding pipeline.

0-16 in conference is brutal. We’ve been there.

It’s been rough few years at Pacific and I don’t see it getting easier.

I was surprised when they were able to land Stoudamire. His name recognition probably opened some recruiting doors and he seemed to do a good job of getting his team to play hard and get the most out of the talent he had.

Romar out at Pepperdine too. Dominoes starting to fall, and Pepperdine doesn’t want Pacific to beat them to the candidate pool.

I’m guessing Romar will land alright on an NBA or high major bench.

I will put this in Around the West Coast Conference thread. I noticed that Houston Mallette entered the transfer portal. Wonder if to do with the poor season, the coaching change, or just seeking other options. Interesting he chose just BEFORE the WCC Tourney to do this.

I think he was going to leave regardless whether Romar stayed. Mallette’s talents were wasted at Pepperdine, IMO. I think that there is a good chance he ends up on a P5 squad or a top MWC team.

Santa Clara has to at least make a call, right? Mallette is really good and could be a fringe NBA guy in a system that allows him to thrive. I see him landing at SDSU or a spot like that. Maybe even UCLA looks to bring in a guy like Mallette after their awful season.

He’s from Alameda, so I’d venture a guess to say that Bay Area teams have a shot at getting him.

When a player enters the portal, what is the protocol for contact? Does contact have to wait until after the player has no more games in the season left to play? (which, in Mallette’s case, could mean he’s done likely no later than Saturday).

Can Mallette play in the WCC tourney if he’s officially entered the portal?

Too lazy to Google or research…maybe he has simply announced that he PLANS to enter the portal but hasn’t and won’t officially do so until Pepps season is over…which won’t be long.

Related subject…I have to believe both Porter and Ajayi are at high risk of transferring or possibly turning pro.
May be a complete rebuild from the ground up at Pepp.

Found this: 2024 Transfer Portal: What to know about NCAA Transfer Portal rules

Apparently he is injured and out for the WCC tournament. Might be part of reason to be declaring himself for the portal. I also understand it’s not official until end of season.

Jevon Porter and back-up guard Cord Stansberry are or will enter the transfer portal.

Porter will have a ton of suitors including Power 6 schools.

The Broncos recruited and offered Stansberry in high school. Doubt we have much interest now but who knows.

I imagine Ajayi will transfer as well…I’m sure there’s more than one school who has already expressed interest through back water channels.

Pepperdine set to battle UOP for last place next year. Mathematically impossible for them BOTH to go winless in conference though.

The top 7 waves with eligibility remaining have now all entered or plan to enter the transfer portal: Ajayi, Porter, Mallete, Malik Moore, Cord Stansberry, Jalen Pitre, Nils Cooper. 4 starters, the remaining starter, Ethan Anderson is out of eligibility.

Plus Pacific’s Donovan Williams.

It would be awesome if we could get one of those starters.

I’d take Ajayi in a heartbeat…versatile, does everything well, defends, rebounds, can score at all 3 levels. I’m sure a bunch of power conference schools will be all over him.

The guy I would most want from the transfer portal, if he were to enter, would be Alvaro Cardenas from SJSU. He torched the Broncos and would fill SCU’s current weak spot perfectly. SCU is right down the block and considerably better resourced than SJSU.

Good call. That kid has talent and savvy.

I didn’t want to start a new thread relative to this topic and question as it may be a brief discussion.

Can someone tell me the current length of Herb Sendek’s contract? If not mistaken, his initial contract was 6 years if recalled correctly.
