Not clear the cause from the press release, but it’s only 3 weeks before the season. Hopefully for the program, it’s something in Carr’s personal life (as opposed to yet undisclosed scandal) and that he’s able to be with family and friends.
Bill is a stand-up guy.
I’m wondering if losing nearly his entire roster after their most successful season during his tenure soured him on the job and profession. Most of these coaches got into the business to mentor and coach student-athletes, and that’s not quite what the job description is these days. I’m just speculating.
The timing isn’t good, but maybe this was the best way to give his staff a shot, and an extra year to figure out their next moves?
Yeah this was confusing for sure. Like others, I hope that its not relating to the program, especially with media day this week. Wishing for the best if its personal and if he doesn’t love it anymore
Tony Bennett, National Championship-winning coach at UVA, just announced his retirement from the sport, effective immediately.
You may be right. The job is just too hard now with NIL and the transfer portal. If someone draped in glory like Bennett can just walk away (or Jay Wright before him), then someone like Carr who has to grind just as hard to get a WBIT berth from Santa Clara just isn’t in a sustainable position.
Heard he resigned because of some health issues with his wife. His wife never made the move from the San Diego area after he was named coach. She was supposed to finally make the move this year. Unfortunately some health issues prevented her moving and led Bill to decide it was best to be with his wife.
Carr has landed on his feet, good to see. I had heard about this a few weeks ago, but now its official:
