Starting a thread for general commentary on the tourney games.
This Siena-Duke game is absolutely brilliant. The David vs Goliath narrative kind of reminds me of the final game in the movie Hoosiers. Hopefully a similar outcome.
FWIW, Siena has been playing a lot of zone.
Head coach was a starter on Syracuse’s National Championship team, so not terribly surprising. But it has been very effective against the Blue Devils.
Iowa St’s best player (and former SMC Gael) Joshua Jefferson left early w/ injury Friday and is supposedly doubtful for today’s game vs. KU. Jefferson does everything for them, plays sort of a point forward role and leads them in assists, and leads or nearly leads in scoring, rebounds. Would have liked to face ISU w/o him. Clearly, they were better than KU, they are more sound and shoot it better but they aren’t as athletic and I think KU’s athleticism (ie- 11 blocked shots, Owen and others penetrating at will) gave us more trouble than anything.
I noticed this as well. Kind of hoping that Iowa State blasts the Wildcats so that it stings less. I Kentucky makes the Sweet 16, that will hurt a lot thinking of what could have been.
Another thing I am noticing is that the referees are stopping play on these late game shots to verify the amount of time remaining on the clock. That stoppage would have definitely helped us set our defense and employ a fouling strategy if needed.
