I never thought he was anything else. Though I did hope he might decide he’s not getting any better and go pro at whatever level he can. I’d rather they had him then went out and got some transfer that is Brandon Clarke 2. Or Domas Sabonis. Or several other guys.
Timme is overrated just like this team was overrated. Good team, easily the best in the conference, but nowhere near the best in the country. History will remember them better than they were, but nowhere near as good as people thought they were before tonight.

It isn’t at all. Baylor beats them 9 times out of 10, sometimes by more points than tonight. So they aren’t winning the league.
They did beat West Virginia on a neutral court, but WVU changed a lot during the season and would have been better against them without Tshiebwe than they were with. Bridges hadn’t emerged at that point either. They gave Timme and Suggs major problems. Culver was and is better than Timme. Sean McNeil isn’t going to shoot 1 of 9 very often. In a conference situations where Zags has to play good teams in true road games, could definitely see them dropping at least one if not both.
In big conference basketball, you don’t get to pick where and when you play your toughest opponents. And the Big 12 plays double round robin, so they would have to play tough true road games against all of those teams. At Phog Allen. At Iba. At Texas. At Tech. In Morgantown. It would be a completely different deal. You come in unprepared and let up in those places like they did several times in the WCC, and you don’t come out of it with a win like in the WCC. You lose.
I was being kind. They might have finished 5th, or 6th depending on how they handled Cunningham. Oklahoma State was good, their downfall in the league was letting down against lesser teams. Oklahoma, who Gonzaga got in their bracket, wasn’t that good. They finished tied for 6th out fo 10 teams at 9-8.
Baylor roared through the league, and then there were 4 teams within a game of each other. Gonzaga could have finished ahead of all of them or none of them.

If you couldn’t see SCU’s defensive game plan in how Baylor played them (with much better players, obviously; shock, Baylor is better than Santa Clara), then I’m not sure if you’ve ever watched a basketball game. Raftery mentioned several times the switch-heavy defense and the focus on containing the guards and keeping them on the perimeter as much as possible.
Gonzaga got so many favorable calls and lucky breaks in this game. At 29-10 I was wondering if they were going to have to start digging up highlights of the Fab Five getting dismantled (wouldn’t have had to go far for a comment on that one) or even UNLV clowning Duke. Baylor could have run it up to 25ish if they had wanted. Gonzaga’s starters had quit.
This whole season around college basketball would have been viewed completely differently if Baylor and Gonzaga had played in December as scheduled.
I wonder if Gonzaga would have been out early if they had gotten a tougher bracket (it would be impossible to have gotten an easier one) as a result of it being known that they weren’t the best team.
A bunch of them did beat Oklahoma, which is all Gonzaga really had to do other than beat a rec league team.
Gonzaga didn’t play a true road game against P5+Big East all year.
It’s been 6 seasons since the last team they beat away that was 11-7 in a P5 or the Big East.
There were 5 teams in the Big 12 that were 11-7 or better this year.
Seems like they do a really good job of scheduling middle teams to play true road games. But you don’t get to do that when you’re in a double round robin conference, and you don’t get to play them when you decide it works for you. And the last 2 against truly elite P5 or Big East teams in true road games, they lost.

Baylor and Coach Drew didn’t learn anything from the Broncos and Sendek because they didn’t need to. There are several common or accepted ways to defend pick & roll, Switching is just one of them and a fairly common approach. It isn’t something unique or special that Sendek (or Drew for that matter) came up with, Baylor just has great athletes and great individual defenders to execute it at a higher level than most teams.
Go ahead, ask him. Absolutely guarantee you they did. Jakus was the film guy at Zags. He would know better than anyone that in the limited time they had, it would make more sense to focus on the film where a team gave gonzaga trouble and exposed weaknesses. I bet they started cutting clips from the scu game the day after it was played. And sendek is well respected by coaches, whether you all like it or not.
No question that game was the blueprint. Did Baylor do it better? Of course. But their approach was the same.
It’s weird that it causes so called fans here so much pain to admit it when it is so bleeding obvious. It wasn’t just switching. Did you miss how Mitchell would take one dig at the ball handler and then back off a step? They were focused on containing the dribbler. They didn’t want to give up clean looks but if Zags wanted a 3 they were happy to let anyone but kispert take it. Same approach.
And did you see what happened when gonzaga went zone? Few said hard as it would be to be worse than their man, it was. Changing did him no good.
Double-sweet victory for me watching Gonzaga lose and having Baylor ML.
This was a very very good Gonzaga team that lacked that 7-8th guy. Baylor seemed to get stronger going to its bench, while Gonzaga had no answer after getting punched in the mouth at the start.
It would be one thing if all the tv pundits “experts” were saying this a great team, or if all the computers were saying this a great team. But both saying that Gonzaga was great, and 5 very strong non-conference wins is no coincidence for me. They took advantage of a weaker college basketball season and had a remarkable run - and I’m glad they lost in the end. They were the 2nd best team last night and probably the 2nd best team in the country.
I’m not sure they were the 2nd best. They didn’t have to go through full strength Michigan. They had a silly easy quadrant. They didn’t have an opponent that was even capable of beating them for 2 months or more.
To me gonzaga lacked more than another bench body. Duke has won national titles with a 6 man rotation.
They lacked size and athletic ability but no one they played was endowed in such a way to take advantage, but that isnt bc baylor is the only team with athletic forwards. Vital is 6-5 and owned the glass.
They also lacked outside shooting beyond kispert. But they didn’t play very many teams that could keep them out of the lane. Again, doesn’t mean they were not out there. West Virginia did it well and on another day could have won (I’m aware they didn’t).
They are what I thought they were. It’s not even like these frailties weren’t apparent (we knew they were small and their biggest guy wasn’t a fast twitch athlete, and that their guards mostly pass up the 3) in a major conference, they would have been exposed well before now.

I haven’t had just one point, I’ve had several bc as was noted by someone else, the conversation changed and was allowed to changed multiple times without intervention.
Interesting that only when gonzaga loses and i post about it that it becomes a problem.
