Santa Clara to Open a Medical School

Will be the first new medical school in the Bay Area in a century. I had heard this rumored for a little over a year but thought maybe the idea had died on the vine.

Pretty cool for the school and solidifies SCU in the highest tier of Jesuit institutions in the country. If I’m not mistaken, only four other Jesuit universities have a medical school (SLU, LUC, Georgetown, and Creighton) and only one other Jesuit school has a graduate-level School of Theology (BC). Santa Clara will be the only institution to have both.

That is extremely exciting news! This feels like a very smart expansion at a critical time as the value of a college education is under intense pressure from AI considerations. Having a medical school should be a big draw for the school generally and lock in future relevance. Love it!

I had to keep this one under the hat, but I am really excited about it! We’ve always wanted to be the west coast Georgetown (subbing political proximity for tech proximity), and I think this moves us closer.

Further, having some Santa Clara Bronco physicians seems like a good thing for our world.

Many schools seem to be on rocky footing, glad to see that we at least feel this strong of a footing within SCU.

I always wondered why SCU did not have a medical school. It seems a natural fit for a Jesuit/Catholic university - physicians’ jobs are to literally help people who need it. I’d guess there will a clinic for aspiring physicians to help those who cannot afford medical care otherwise. Under the watchful eye of an actual physician, of course.

I’m a little confused by the headline (and didn’t get past the paywall) - they clearly mean first NEW medical school in the Bay Area. The headline is poorly worded, IMO.

Fantastic!

Standing up a med school is no small feat. The Stevens’ step up again. And sure there are many others pitching in, tapping in to the $1.5-2 Billion endowment, etc.

Can’t get past the paywall but imagine it will take a few years to get up and running and then accreditation.

Between this and the continued afterglow following the MBB team’s season, seems like it’s an especially exciting time to be a Bronco! I hope the momentum continues. Excited for the university community on many fronts.

Not sure about other details that may have been offered in the Mercury (paywall) but I read the school press release. Appears it’s a unique partnership w/ Sutter Health System and the new facility/campus will be adjacent and part of a Sutter Health facility 5 miles from the Mission Campus. Sounds like they already recently broke ground. It’s good to see that this is ‘real’ not a pie-in-the-sky announcement still dependent on a bunch of additional fund raising to make it happen…I’ve seen a ton of initiatives never actually get off the ground or substantially delayed in both higher Ed and community/non-profit space.

Sounds like a smart approach and partnership enabling this to move forward faster and with greater lighthouse of success. Built in connections with a health system…win/win for both sides.

One detail(s) not mentioned are the specific programs offered. Ie- how extensive of offerings will there be…physician assistants, pharmacy, PT, OT, nursing, etc.??? The needs and shortages in the medical industry span all areas.

Have heard UOP will announce the same very soon.

The more med schools the better.

UOP already has Physician Asst, Dental, Nursing, Pharmacy, OT, PT…more of incremental step to add medical docs.
