This truly is the put up or get packing season… 6 years is more than enough time to show some true progress (which for SCU is NIT/NCAA consideration). Getting 20 wins against the worst teams in D1 isn’t an achievement. Heck, KK did that.
Final year of Herb’s contract.
+1000 Patty. Spot on.
Betterer- you won’t like this, but I fully expect Sendek to be around for at least a 7th season whether he deserves to be or not… a .500ish season is probably all it will take. Sendek and his agent will point to the ‘21 recruiting class which looks good on paper and say: ‘give me a few years w/ these guys to see what I can do’ and as we all know SCU typically gives coaches a very long leash. Would probably take a 10–12 win season or worse in 21/22 for Sendek to be on the hotseat. Just my opinion…no inside info.
The inner Golden Circle has more of a say in the matter than the AD/Admin and I’ve heard that they aren’t thrilled with what they have purchased to this point. Results this season will weigh heavy.
My point is that USD’s berth was a fluke and a bit of a joke, and they’re the obvious reference to the recent NIT berth to not SMC or BYU. Still hard to understand, tbh. But I do not expect 7-9 and 6th in the league to be considered a success by folks here.
As far as the 32 years, it’s completely valid bc surely we admit that winning the league would be a miracle. When’s the last time SCU made postseason without winning the conference regular season or the tournament? So chances are, it’s not going to happen and SCU could certainly have a good season and not be selected. NIT is a beauty contest and their at large picks need not have any relation to which teams are actually the most deserving.
LOL lower expectations…I’d say you more than did that when you kept Keating for 9 years or let Davey stay too long. The program of the 80s and early to mid 90s is long gone. Should USF fire every coach for not winning a national title so that 65 years doesn’t become 75? Or LMU for not averaging 100 ppg?
This is even more ridiculous than the NC State fans that thought they should be beating Duke and UNC in the late 90s/early 2000s (when pretty much no one was) just bc they lucked/cheated into a NC in the early 80s and mid 70s. They’ll be sitting on 29 years next winter with no end in sight regardless of who the coach is.
Last year’s team did finish playing well. But only part of the core of that team is back, and the rest are mostly inexperienced. Back to the original point which was scheduling, they have the best chance to be their best by January by playing games where they can both learn and build confidence while integrating with those few veterans that went through last year’s season from hades.
Vrankic, Justice, and J. Williams are pretty experienced at the WCC level. The rest of the returners have been pretty much bit players, and around half the roster has little experience at all. So basically you have 3 guys back that you know what you’re going to get from them. I wouldn’t call that “lots of experience”.
How do they feel about paying more for it?
Guessing this isn’t exactly Texas football as far as paying buyouts goes.
Funny, you said last year was the last year of Herb’s contract for like 2 years. I’m guessing you’ve never even seen Herb’s contract to know what it says, and he’s probably not going to talk about it.
Another thread completely hijacked by people who wish ill on the program because they don’t like the coach.
Herb’s 5 year contract ended last season. Covid pushed a decision out another year. There will be a decision to make at the end of this season.
Sure, Jan.
Original reporting was actually that he signed a 6 year contract in March 2016.
There’s a decision to make every year. It’s just some years are easier than others.
Contracts don’t just get put on hold because reasons. If he did have a 5 year contract, then it was either extended or a new contract agreed. And SCU would be under no obligation to release anything about it.
I knew a guy who worked for the same school as a head coach for 40 years with a one year contract every year. He could have had a 20 year contract for all it mattered, but it’s not like there was an announcement every year about a new contract.
Bettererer- I think Herb will get another year for COVID, barring a wipeout record like KK had, which I don’t think they’ll have. Also there are three other experienced players beside Jalen , Keshawn, and Vrankic mentioned in another earlier post that were more than bit players, G Williams who played well the last third of last season and was the Broncs best 3pt guy, Tombley, and Bediako. Maybe one of the new freshmen will contribute early (hope Stewart blossoms into a Kevin Foster type). If Keshawn can regain his stroke, and Pipes shows, they should do well. Less than .500 in conference might stir a search, another 7-9th place surely would. It’s easy to be optimistic in July, but they seem to have the talent for Herb’s best season, which discounting last year, has only been a notch above break-even.
So is that another year added to 5, which would be this year? Or another year added to 6, which would be next year?
There could very easily be an extension, but that’s what it would be. Not “oh we just aren’t going to do anything bc covid and surely you’ll be willing to work without a contract, right?” That…seems very unlikely.
I definitely am not expecting even one year like Keating’s last 3 when he went 39-57. Guy had 2 winning seasons and still got 9 years. That’s where the expectations train went off the rails and the connection to the now distant past of the program took place.
I wouldn’t consider Bediako, G Williams or Tomley more than bit players. The 1–2-3 scorers are back. The 4-5-6 aren’t. Then you’re down to like 4-5 ppg guys that played 15 mpg.
Tomley and Bediako hardly scored and barely played in conference play. G Williams was basically if his shot is on he’s worth bringing off the bench and if it’s not then he isn’t because his passing, ballhandling, and defense are all below par. I do not expect his role to change. So that’s about 3 1/2 guys we have some idea what we’re getting. And that’s all. Bediako has been up and down, and Tomley to be honest has not done much to inspire confidence.
Pipes we think can play, but we won’t know until we see it. Djuricic hasn’t played a lot of college basketball, and definitely not lately. Everyone else is very inexperienced.
Those are the things that need to be worked through and you need time, space and opportunity to do it. Going out and getting blasted by 40 by someone you know you can’t beat doesn’t help that process a bit. Losing a close one can offer some advantages. Winning definitely helps. If you can learn while winning, that’s the best.
(Edit to add: this isn’t relevant for this thread, and I’ll leave you all to it from here unless there are posts about actual schedule news.)
Here’s a great game of Pipes vs Big East team Marquette. Don’t let the level foul you…
A great watch and the Announcers loved the name too…
PS… He did the same against over High Major teams over his 4 years…
Looks like he enjoys the big stage.
Looks like we are finally in a non-conference tournament! We will play in the SoCal Challenge from November 22-24, which consists of 8 teams (Cal Poly, University of Idaho, Nicholls, Utah Valley, TCU, Fresno, Pepperdine, and the Broncos). I’m happy to see we are in a tournament outside of the Bronco Invitational/Cable Car Classic. Ideally we play against TCU and Fresno. It would be a shame if we just play Cal Poly, Nicholls, and Pepperdine… Anyways good to see more games scheduled.
It’s not the best tournament we could hope for, but I don’t quite hate it. I think it will really depend on what the rest of the schedule gets filled out with. I don’t care if SCU plays Cal Poly in a tournament so long as the mere participation in a tournament doesn’t give cover for scheduling Alcorn State et al. for the rest of the home games.
The OOC schedule is measured in aggregate, I think. If this is your tournament, fine, but the Broncos need to have 1-2 good challenges beyond the tournament to make up for what they would normally get from one of these events.
One thing I notice is this is not being called a tournament anywhere. 8 teams, 3 days is a tournament setup but it doesn’t have to be a tournament.
Which means the reality of who we play could vary greatly. We might not be playing Pepperdine, for example.
Ditto Patty Mac- Seems like it’s mainly populated with teams we might have played anyway, just now near some beach. The potential against TCU or Fresno State fills the slots for a P5 (lower half Big 12) and a good MWC team. If SCU and Pepp are on opposite sides of two- four team pods, and so are Fresno and TCU, then I guess Santa Clara has a chance to play both teams if the Broncs get to the final. That would be a pretty good three day run.
That’s a good catch. I assume it’s meant to be an exempt event, though?
I still think the structure of such an event (and the OOC schedule in general) is a distant second to the overall strength.
Well I mean it’s going to a component of the OOC, and with 3 games a fairly significant component (20% ish?). But yeah, obviously the whole matters more than 20% of the whole.
I also think it’s a cause worth being involved in, for whatever that’s worth to anyone here.
Are they playing this thing at the outdoor court near the train tracks at SJC beach? Or some high school? I don’t recall any legit gym in SJC. The teams are blah. Let’s hope the venue is a tad bit better.
I think they will play in the JSerra Highschool indoor court. Not sure how nice that is.
Also looks like we will be playing Montana at home this season.
Montana is a decent to good mid-major team. I’m into it. More please!
