Interesting that Men’s basketball did the poorest in the day of giving and failed to meet its goal. Raised $18k far below women’s basketball the soccer programs, water polo et al.
We did not participate in the day of giving since we give an annual gift to the Santa Clara Fund and Bronco Bench. I did find it surprising that men’s basketball was so low, I thought they were one of the highest fundraisers last year. Maybe dissatisfaction with run of the mill results.
I feel like it’s been that way every year… my guess is people who give to “general athletics” assume it’s going to basketball. At least I do.
Or a little bit of apathy maybe. The non-revenue sports work hard to raise money because they inevitably get less of it from the university. Men’s basketball knows that they will be fully funded and get nice things, so there’s less incentive to go hard at fundraising.
Thanks, that makes sense. The other sports need money to survive.
Overall, good day of fundraising. I’m always surprised at how few people participate. There were 4,577 gifts (but assume many made a number of gifts) so overall not a huge turnout. Athletics had 1,658 gifts. It definitely shows that having a strong. vibrant athletics program creates a lot of engagement with donors
I may be assuming based on my own social media, but I think the push was a little bit diminished this year. And that may have been by design since it’s a tough year to be asking for donations. Even if folks have the money to give (savings are at a recent high) the optics are bad.
I hope that next year they can get back to really pushing it. I seem to remember that having 20% or so alumni give annual donations was a goal that seemed achievable (if ambitious) several years ago.
I did not participate this year. A little bit of Coronapathy. i have a set of charities that are all doing their version of “all-in” right now. I will eventually get around to making my usual donations in my usual spots. But can’t muster the energy at the moment. Maybe others feeling the same way.
