WCC Game 14: at GU

I thought we played well and the effort was there. The Zags wanted revenge and yet we hung in there and gave them a scare. They hit 50% from three and had many more free throws. I thought we played a solid game but they played a little bit better. If we can play like this we should be ok the last two games and in the tourney. Go Broncos!,

If by “ok” you mean end the season 4 games from now with a loss to SMC, then yeah,. I think you’re right.
Were 20+ games into the season and we can’t even run a baseline inbounds play to get a clean look??? Coaches should be ashamed. Pathetic.

Great first half but hard to keep up with zag offense which is rolling now .

Caffero was great tonight . We should be throwing lobs more and less bounce passes to the bigs and trying to post up with too many dribbles .

Marshall and Bal don’t seem to have recovered from their illnesses .

Was afraid that Bal might leave us for NBA. Can’t we get another year ?? His recent struggle may keep him on the mission campus for another year .

Remember, I am a 25 year Zag fan but started following Santa Clara when Henry Caruso played for you (like to hear him when he is the color man on your broadcasts). I was really high on Santa Clara before the start of this year and thought you would finish third and you might very well do it. I hope the Zags take down USF next week and then Santa Clara takes revenge for what happened last time on the Hilltop. You had some great wins this year but too many bad losses. One thing that has hurt your team is the total inconsistency of what to expect. You played the Zags great this year but were a no show with the Gaels. As many have mentioned, your turnovers, spotty defense sometimes and lack of ball movement have been your achilles heal.

Last night, I thought you played the Zags very well and was not totally comfortable even when we were up by ten. You outrebounded the Zags, shot a good percentage and
had 13 assists. If I remember correctly, didn’t one game this year you only had four assists?
Personally, I think your team played better with Bal and Marshall on the bench. I liked the ball movement and your ability to get the ball to your big men down low. I have been surprised of how versatile Johnny O’Neil has become. When you first started he was mainly a spot up 3 point shooter. His turn around jumper when being defended well spoke volumes on how far he has come. You have a great core of players for next year. You just need some more point guard help. Don’t want to face you again in the WCC tourney.

CPK…Very gracious with your comments about the Broncos. Your Zags are the better team and thought both Nembhard and Hickman were fantastic as was Ike.

Nembhard has great vision, and he was penetrating and probing while keeping dribble alive. SCU had no answers defensively. Broncos shot the ball well and thought they hung in there on the glass. I thought this was one of Christoph Tilly’s best games as a Bronco. Our FT shooting is a concern too.

Appreciate your input!

It’s a bummer that the majority of Zag fans I have met are great people.

Great, comments, CPK!

I have this problem as well. I did JVC, and Gonzaga sends more alumni into JVC (per capita based on campus population) than any other school–or at least did at the time. So I ended up knowing a lot of Zags who are incredible people.

I agree we have much better ball movement with Bal on the bench. I don’t think he is quite over his leg injury, and I feel he is being forced into the ball handling when he should not be. We have great ball handlers in JB and BK. TBH - I did not notice the impact with/without Marshall since he seemed to be in and out in smatterings.

We need to show up for Gaels in Vegas and we need to make up for the USF loss on Saturday. Of course, our focus needs to be on Portland right now as you never want to be taken down by a sleeper.
