WCC Game 3: @ USD

These threes are gonna make me an alcoholic. They are very poorly selected and with the inside so open it’s killing me.

And Tyree literally tosses up another AWFUL THREE after Ensminger rebound!!! Unbelievable!!!

Just attack the rim!

Every underdog in the conference overperforming tonight except Pepp who cashed theirs in the past two games. Just close this out, please. Let the Dons take the upset.

Stewart carried the team tonight. Not pretty, but a road win

don’t even remotely love the win, that was gross. I know I’ve been very harsh in my comments in recent weeks but that’s what happens with expectations, I can’t in good faith handhold them

How so? Because his missed attempts resulting in San Diego baskets hurts. I’d be curious to see his +/-

I’m sorry but we don’t have guards. Not as of late at least. They don’t run a good offense. Too much passing back and forth at the top.

I am going to strongly disagree. This is definitely on the coaching.

In this game, we had the obvious advantage close-in to the basket.

So either the coaches are not telling the players to work the ball inside, or they are telling the players but the players are ignoring them.

If the former, then the coaches aren’t seeing what is obvious: high percentage shots are there for the taking.

If the latter, then the coaches aren’t holding the players accountable for bad decisions.

Either way, the coaches are responsible.

I remember seeing both Carroll Williams and Dick Davey pull starting players (and scold them) when those players went off-script. And those players learned their lessons.

Stewart may have carried the night, but it didn’t feel like team basketball.

I agree 100% with this observation. Really hope the coaches work with these guys next six days. Work on the pick and roll. Work on back door cuts. Work on inside drives. IN FACT run an entire practice where they CANNOT take the three. lol

Then wrap up the practice with 100 FT each.

There’s something wrong with Tilly’s hand/wrist. He was wearing either a brace or sleeve on it. Couldn’t quite make it out from my seat

Tilly hit the floor late in the USF game and came up holding his wrist. That may have been the incident that led to his being out tonight.

It was a thin brace, not a cast–the kind you can buy at CVS. I caught that on the tv feed at one point. Take from that what you will.

I wouldn’t mind that.
But we’ve now passed the half way point in the season…it seems a little late in the season to be working on what should be fundamental and elementary aspects of the game…stuff these guys should have learned in 5th grade.

The only positive from tonight was that we won. Not pretty.

And they made FTs at the end. Of course, it shouldn’t have been that close.

Some highlights:

  • Our worst defensive rating of the season on Torvik, a hair worse than the Nevada blowout.
  • allowed 80 pts to the 348th ranked offense and worst offense in the WCC.
  • Forced a season low 5 TO’s.

But hey we won so everything’s cool…right?

Damn fortunate we made our FT’s down the stretch…7/8 in last ~2mins.

Two words: Nailed it.

For the next seven days the three point line doesnt exist.

And you cant eat until you make 89 from 100 from the charity stripe.

Of the 16 games so far, the Broncos’ last three are #s 16, 14, and 13 in terms of defensive efficiency. They’re regressing on defense, if anything. Not good.

SCU gets a week off before the next game. And it couldn’t be at a better moment: the next stretch of 7 games is, if not the whole ballgame for conference, probably about 80% of it. Santa Clara will play each of the teams competing for slots 1-7 in the conference and none of the 8-11 teams. It will be a month before SCU plays another sub-125 team.

After the next 7 games, we will know if SCU is likely to finish second or seventh.

Last thought: It may be time to rotate O’Neil and Ensminger again. O’Neil has figured it out while Ensminger’s offense only looks worse now than when he took the starting spot, and he seems totally bereft of confidence. Jake’s offensive rebounding remains a big asset, but Johnny has been much better since getting benched.

We’ll take a win any way we can get it, but this game shouldn’t have been close at all, despite being without Tilly. I give USD credit for playing hard, but to say there is a disparity in talent is an understatement.

I thought Carlos played well, nice game too by Cam. I’d like to see a little more of Carlos and Knapper on the floor together. Ensminger is smart player, but provides little to nothing offensively.

Yes, we do look stagnant on offense whether it be a lack of moving without the ball, and need more activity against a zone defense. Need guys flashing to the high post. Defensively, Ugh!!! We don’t trap, peripheral vision is non existent at times. We just seem to lack discipline defensively.

On the plus side and mentioned by others: FT shooting and did see some imagination with out of bounds plays too, mainly when USD pressed. I don’t know why, but Sendek’s teams have really struggled to inbound the ball to the point that it gives me heartburn.

We’re a made FT away from being 3-0 in conference, but the defense needs to make significant strides if we are to become a legitimate threat in conference play.

This was true under KK’s tenure as well.
