That put the nail in the coffin.
I agree with you there BballFemmeā¦ from my perspective Herb teaches no touch defense, which seems completely insane to me.
And yes, East Coast bball vs West Coast is quite different. Sorry your son has had a rough go of it at SCU.
I will be interested to see what the league looks like next year. Feel like the WCC benefited more than most conferences from the COVID āfree year.ā USF had Bouyea/Massalski as 5th year guys, SMC has Kuhse as a 6th year, and we had Vrankic. Amazingly, Taupe from USF still has another year despite starting his career in 2016!
Most frustrating thing about last night is SMC is a pretty good matchup for us. It is interesting how WCC matchups have worked over the last few years. We have struggled mightily against USF, yet USF has not beaten SMC since Golden has been head coachā¦and we have beaten SMC 3 times during that stretch.
We also have Pipes as a 5th year or Super Seniorā¦whatever you want to call it.
Weāve benefited greatly from this in having a very experienced/veteran playing rotation combined with a special talent in Jalen. This positive set of circumstances is difficult to replicate which is why Iāve been preaching all year: āthe time is nowā.
Iām right there with you 92ā¦ and here we are hoping for an NIT invite.
I get the idea that āwe have to start somewhereā, but this didnāt just start yesterday. This is Herbās 6th season. Personally, I view every year as basically starting over. The way college hoops is today rosters change so much season to season that itās hard to know what to expect from one season to the next.
Letās face it lots of good fortune went in SCUās favor to compile this years team. Think Herb can keep that going? Iād be extatic to see SCU become transfer/grad transfer U, I just dont see that continiung.
Not to take anything away from this squad, but from my seats this looks like the high water mark for Herbās foreseeable futureā¦ guess I should enjoy whatever is left of this season.
I do agree, but some misfortune happened as well. A couple late transfers out of the program and our second leading scorer out for month with mono. Get 3 of those losses back while vrankic was out and we could be talking ncaa bubble.
We all know the NCAA is much better than the NITā¦ that said, I consider either to be a good season. If we go to the NIT, it would be the first legitimate post-season for Santa Clara since 1997. I canāt see the U doing anything other than letting Herb try to build on that foundation.
Letās enjoy this run fellas - this is a fun team to watch! Way too early to fret about next year. And, if last year is any indication, we stand to benefit from the new transfer rules. Iām bullish on Bronco basketball and excited about an NIT run. We have 4 solid starters and I like the rotation of Braun, Bediako & Holt.
Totally agreeā¦ Student Attendance at Leavy was nonexistent, as well as at WCC Tournament.
The question is why? And what is being done to change it?
Well said Bettererer
This isnāt the NFL, noris JW Aaron Rogers
I disagree. AR isnāt a free agent, heās under contract. In JWās situation, he holds the power in this dynamic. If he doesnāt see the roster improvements, he can say adios and enter the draft.
If thatās the case and HS complies, more reason HS isnāt suited for the jobā¦
Santa Clara needs to look at schools like Grand Canyon who have built a huge student group for basketball and other sports by making the games fun. Theme nights, 100 member band , 50 cheerleaders. Grand Canyon had 5,200 at baseball opening night
The question is why hasnāt Santa Clara done any to increase student attend?
And who would be responsible for that? Is it the ADās responsibility? If so, why hasnāt Renee done anything to correct the problem?
Will be an interesting decision for Jalen. I believe he can declare and go through the entire process while still maintaining eligibility as long as he does not sign with an agent. That seems like the most logical thing to do. Some team might become enamored with him after a workout and give him a first round guarantee.
NBA first rounders get 4 year contracts, with 2 of those being guaranteed. Last yearās first overall pick is guaranteed a total of 17 million over two years, while the last pick of the first round is āonlyā guaranteed 3.5 million.
You can look at the payscale here for 1st round draft picks. NBA Rookie Scale - RealGM
Well, letās see what next year brings. Received several calls from East Coast coaches encouraging my son to go into the Portal and head BACK to East Coast. (Several of his teammates played in Sweet-16 games this season, kids he ranked above). After contemplation and discussion, he is going to stay because he likes the school, his teammates, and he has learned the system. I did get to speak with the coaches who envision a HUGE future for him. I was impressed that they reached out - which is a good indicator they are still invested in my kiddo. We will take this year as a learning/developmental year and see what next year brings. He is already back in the gym and grabbing every extra workout session he can. (Gonna admit, I am a little SKEPTICAL as the defense really is not at all what he is accustomed.) Praying for his success and the team as a whole for the next year.
Did you watch the final Championship game with UNC and Kansas? Now THAT is letting boys play and made for SPECTACULAR basketball to watch. TRULY HOPE the California Refs Assoc or wherever we get the WCC refs pick up on this fact and start following the lead.
Glad your son is staying at SCU. I would think the coaches would value defense since that appeared to be a weakness this last year that we need to work on. I also agree about your comment on WCC refs. I often look at the stats and see where the other team has many more free throws than SCU. Seems to be a bias for certain schools. It doesnāt help Gonzaga in the tournament when calls they normally get in the WCC donāt go their way.
Glad heās sticking around. SCU is a wonderful college experience. Hopefully, the on court experience gets better. I liked his effort and physical play in the early part of the season. I expected heād see more time as the season progressed (not less). If I was a coach Iād love to see fouling (it means the kid is getting after it and wants to win). Who cares if a Frosh fouls out in 10 minutes? If he does, trust me keep putting him in and heāll learn when, and where to foul so that the whistle doesnāt get blown.
Yes, the UNC Kansas game was real mens defenseā¦True, WCC refs might be a little hard on the whistle, but I think itās more of an individual team thing. Obviously, Herb does not teach fouling as an art form, and I think that is much to the detriment of the team. The world may have grown soft in the past decade or two, but funny how the most physical teams still dominate the NCAA tourney.
