Grew up playing point guard but had a late growth spurt. Very skilled. Had some big time offers including SEC schools. Older Brother played 4 years at LSU in a reserve role.

6’9” with a pg background and skill set, and very likable as well. Seems to be a very encouraging acquisition. Welcome, Allen!

Former PG with a late growth spurt…sounds familiar…turned out well for us the last time we landed someone like that.

I like that he put up big #'s, 23pts/16rebs, in the State championship game last season.

Since we are on the topic of the front court in the SMC thread…

2024 commit Allen Graves led his team to its second consecutive state championship yesterday down in Louisiana. He was awarded Most Outstanding Player with 19 points, 20 rebounds, 8 blocks, and 2 assists. His school had never before won a state championship, and now they have two with the future Bronco.

Elijah Mahi, SCU’s other recruit to join next season (at West Valley CC), led his team to a berth in the NorCal community college finals (state semi-finals) with a 26 point, 11 rebound performance. Mahi was declared the conference MVP this season and is averaging 16.5 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game. He has shot 46.6% from three this season.

Great news on both players.

However, I am concerned about our future at PG. I hope Sendek can fill the pipeline with one or more exceptional ballhandlers

Elijah Mahi’s West Valley team also had its first undefeated season. I’m looking forward to seeing this kid play.

26 points, 9 boards, and 8 assists in the most recent game. Not a single turnover. Some of that should translate. Plenty of guys like USF’s Shabazz or our own Carlos Marshall, Jr. and Tyeree Bryan started out in the JC ranks and made the leap effectively.

Your JC point is valid but Shabazz attended D2 Central Washington U ( a few hours from me), tore it up as Frosh, Freshman of the year in his league and transferred to USF. Not sure how he was under recruited, probably his height, but he attended powerhouse Rainier Beach in Seattle, won some state championships and they produce a ton of college hoops players.

We have a decent track record of JC guys…Troy Payne, Doron Perkins, Jamie Holmes (Brian Jones era), Craig Johnson (late Nash years). And we had a consistent pipeline with West Valley during Davey’s years…would get a player about everyone other year incl Johnson above.

Excited for Mahi. Watched somewhat highlight vid when he committed and liked his combination of strength, athleticism, skill and ability to contribute in a variety of ways.

We’ll see who returns and if anyone transfers but on paper currently we have a strong wing group of Bal, Mahi, Bryan, Ensminger.

Now hopefully Sendek and crew can land a true point guard in the transfer portal.

The state community college championships are this weekend, with WVC holding the #1 North seed. They will have streaming video:

Good catch, @92bronc I remembered that Shabazz came up a level but forgot that it was from D2, not JC ranks. Jahlil Tripp from Pacific would have been a better example. He was a JC guy that became the centerpiece on a couple pretty decent Pacific squads under Stoudamire that played like junkyard dogs in the best sense.

Yep and other current great JC examples…USF’s Mogbo spent a year at a JC and Pepp’s Ajayi spent 2 years at a JC…two of the most talented guys in the league IMO.

The WVC roster is an interesting combination of local, West Coast and international players, including a 6’11” Egyptian center averaging 17 and 9.

West Valley is in the championship game. Mahi is an interesting player. Good size. Doesn’t appear to be a great shooter, but he’s VERY good around the hoop - footwork, fakes, angles, both hands, etc. He will create problems for average-sized guards and smaller.

Guys can improve their perimeter shooting with work.

But you can’t teach his combination of athleticism, strength and size.

Combine that with some already solid skills (3pt shooting not so much) and ability to attack the basket, rebound and defend and that makes me excited to see what he can do for the Broncos.

Maybe I am reading the stats wrong, but it looks like Mahi is a blistering 47% from three this season.
