Today is the last day to enter the portal. All players who want to be immediately eligible at their new school need to enter their names by midnight.
Santa Clara gets to be the WCC’s exemplar of stability so far (shared with Gonzaga), which is nice after losing every starter last season. Fingers crossed.
GU frosh guard Luka Krajnovic entered the portal. His PT was spotty but partly due to injury. Seemed like a solid player who could help in the future. GU’s backcourt is thin…Nembhard and Hickman returning, Stromer a wing who can play the 2 but that’s about it, they have no incoming frosh backcourt guys. GU will surely be on the hunt for a guard transfer to provide depth.
Been a slow bleed for USD w/ Hayes and Oladokun entering the portal just before the deadline.
There was legitimate reason for optimize at USD immediately after the season with a better than expected season and no seniors on the roster. But 4 of 5 starters have now transferred plus back-up center Oladokun.
They do still have 4 of 7 of their large freshman class returning, but will be somewhat of a mini-rebuild once again.
Here’s a post that provides the data you’re seeking now that the portal is closed. The WCC had almost 38% of its player-minutes from last season enter the portal. With three intraconference transfers so far, not all of those minutes are leaving the conference, but the lions share is. That’s not the worst by any means, but is on the wrong side of the median. The dissolving Pac-12 is the only power conference that’s worse.
Looks like the school is making it official: no losses to the transfer portal. Bal is in the photo of returners, and the most recent draft boards I have seen do not include him in the top 60. The few that do have him in the last 10 draftees or so. My guess is Bal comes back which should make for a very talented Broncos squad if they can only hold onto the ball.
Femme, I am not certain, but I think it is up to the University (and of course, the jurisdiction where he got the DUI, in the sense) whether he can play. He will probably go through the school’s process, whatever that is. And since it is the off-season, I would think that process would be wrapped up before next season. Whether he is forced to sit or allowed to play without penalty would be up to the result of the school.
UTSA transfer Carlton Linguard Jr. has committed to San Francisco, source told ESPN. Skilled 7-footer averaged 9.3 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.5 blocks last season, shot nearly 31% from 3 on four attempts per game. Had 31 vs. Tulane. Dons beat out high-major competition for him.
Agree buckets.
And it’s a piece USF needs, if Mogbo returns (entered his name in the NBA draft) it would allow him to spend more time at the 4 which is probably his best and most natural position. If Mogbo doesn’t return then USF has a natural center to plug in.
USF had two 7-footers on their roster last season but Markovetskyy was limited and Gigiberia didn’t play (not sure if we was injured and returning). Linguard appears to be an upgrade over those two.
I’d argue that he is a BIG upgrade. His athleticism and versatility, for his size, is hardly ever seen in the WCC. Perhaps Holmgren was the last WCC big with Linguard’s quality footwork and all-around shooting? I can’t even remember a non-Gonzaga player of Linguard’s caliber.
And yes, he will be a better fit at the 4, but definitely can play the 5. Not sure Tilly will be able to guard him well. Cam is gonna have his hands full!
You’re correct. SCU suspended Kevin Foster for the rest of the season when he got one. Gonzaga didn’t suspend Josh Perkins, from what I can remember and from what I could find from a quick search.
I wasn’t clear…if Mogbo returns, having Linguard in the mix would allow Mogbo to play more at the 4 with Linguard but yes, Linguard’s athletic ability and skills probably also allow him to play the 4. Given the abilities of both you could effectively play them together as hybrid 4/5’s and be flexible/versatile with defensive matchups and how you use them offensively.
Mogbo has guard-like ball handling and playmaking skills, he just hasn’t demonstrated at 3pt shot yet. USF often gave Mogbo the ball at the top of the key then let him face up and attack the basket and also act as playmaker/distributor…I think he was 2nd on the team in assists, barely behind their point guard Williams. Mogbo would even occasionally lead the fast break. Quickness/athleticism allows him to defend 3 or 4 positions…remember he was at the point of their press and made a key steal late in the game in our loss at USF. Combine all that and his athleticism and strength and I’d think the NBA would be salivating. They can teach him to be an occasional and serviceable 3pt shooter but hard to teach the other stuff he provides.
I’ll take the other side of this. I think he’s a fine but not spectacular player. His greatest potential is in what he opens up for USF. At UTSA, he had one dazzling game against Tulane but nothing else that makes me believe he’s some diamond in the rough. He was the third best player in a bad UTSA team. High volume in threes with pretty low percentage. Limited at the rim scoring ability against good defenses with size. He seems like the kind of forward who feasts against bad front courts and disappears against actual defense.
That said, he can at least be a credible scoring option that will take a defense off of Mogbo. USF didn’t have that last season, so this is a good move for them even if I’m skeptical that he’s some future All WCC talent.
EDIT: Basically what 92 said with me being more circumspect that Linguard is spectacular in and of himself.
So there is no NCAA rule - just individual schools. I was curious considering all the other rules the NCAA imposed during Cams recruitment. They made it seem as if ANY slip up - your scholarship is revoked. So, curious if that was freeing up another scholarship for LMU.
I cannot believe they called the sleeping player in a car a DUI. I can recall an occasion back in the early 90’s. I had consumed a beer too many at a college party. I went to my car and hunkered down for a good sleep before even thinking about driving. (Just had no desire to stay where loud booming music was making my alcohol induced headache worse). Seems that Perkins was being responsible.
Back on other basketball related items. Looks like San Fran is building a team with more size as well. Should be fun.
The driver was identified as DUI by a Police officer who, Coincidentally, was a former SCU basketball player. (And probably ranks in my top five “nails” guys).
The police officer Recognized the driver.
The officer let driver go with a strong admonishment And told the driver told to walk home.
The driver started to walk home and then then reversed back to his car and decided to drive it home.
The driver was caught again by another police officer.
Shit hit the fan.
The original officer had to log the stop of the driver And the license Plate. So it was clear that The original officer had let the driver go As a favor.
It was an embarrassment for Local police department and especially for the basketball program.
