I checked a few different NIT sites, specifically DRatings and Barking Crow are now updating a few times a day leading in Selection Sunday. We look to be in the NIT field rather comfortably. I have seen us both away and at home relative to a 1st round game.
We all don’t want another “one and done” in the NIT, but my guess is that this team wants another shot after Pepperdine debacle.
In 3 years, former USF coach Todd Golden takes Flordia to SEC Tournament Championship defeating #21 Missouri 95-81 #5 Alabama 104-82 and #8 Tennessee 86-77. Was disappointed when he bailed on the Dons. With the right coach and support, a program can be turned around in less than 9 years. Yes, it can be done!
Another great Todd Golden fact: he has never beaten SMC or Gonzaga. Which is to say that it’s not a realistic goal to “be better than Few or Bennett” but also a successful WCC program doesn’t actually need to. Golden made the tournament without really being competitive with the Zags or Gaels and just being dominant against everyone else.
As discussed above, there’s also the College Basketball Crown, but due to the weird timeline and challenges with recruiting when the transfer portal opens, I doubt many teams will want to be in it who are not contractually obligated to. It doesn’t take place until after the second weekend of the Tournament by which point most teams will be done with their seasons and focused on recruiting. I thought maybe there was some NIL money thrown in like that weird Saudi-sponsored tournament in Vegas, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.
Indiana, one of the First 4 out, has already announced they won’t accept invites to either the NIT or Crown.
The Broncos should comfortably make it, especially with some Bubble teams choosing not to play or playing in the Crown tourney. I will of course watch and root for the Broncos but it’s hard for me to get overly excited with a depleted field that isn’t even the ‘next best’ teams. Broncos need to win at least three, and get to the Final4 at Hinkle……then I might get in to it a bit more.
Edit: South Carolina also just announced they won’t play in the NIT.
If SMC at #7 wins, they likely get Alabama in the 2nd round. A huge contrast in styles, I believe Alabama is the top scoring team in the country……SMC plays defensive grinders. Might be interesting.
Not a very strong field. None of the Bubble First 4 out are playing in the NIT (W. Virginia, Ohio St., Indiana, Boise St.).
The only teams in the NIT I recall legitimately being in the Bubble discussion in recent weeks are #1’s Dayton and SMU, and #2 North Texas.
Completely agree on the weakness of the overall field. Obviously teams declining the NIT and the Basketball Crown taking major teams the field isn’t great.
But I’m ready to get hurt again by an underperforming SCU basketball team. Let’s Fucking Go!!! I’ll be there Tuesday!
