And the amazing part is we played so poorly for long stretches…..copious pointless fouls, missed layups, fumbled the ball out of bounds.
And the Free Throws…..5 / 14 plus two missed front end of 1 and 1 so effectively 5 / 16….barely 30%.
A shocking win given all that. Clutch buckets and assists by Sash late were obviously key. But also the defense stepped up on several possessions late, and held them to single shots and cleared the defensive glass.
Now playing with house money. Let’s hope they can summon some energy after this emotional win and give the Zags a game.
A long time coming but this makes it worth the wait. And beating SMC makes it sweeter. Playing with house money now, so let’s send the Zags packing. Proud to be a Bronco!!!
Just took a look at the SMC message board. Honestly, for the most part, they took the loss well. Just a couple of folks complaining that the refs were either not calling “obvious” fouls on the Broncos, or that the refs were basically favoring SCU. Anyway, they are generally expecting to get slotted as an 8 seed now (down from 7) and expecting us to be a 10 seed. Also, sounds like they will be rooting for our boys tomorrow night.
My fear is that tomorrow ends up being a let down game, both because of the emotional drain from tonight’s game and the likely physical exhaustion from playing a third game in three days.
Oh man, that was glorious. If there is one silver lining to the Zags dominating the conference, it’s that they buy 80% of the tickets and half of them bail after the first half of the doubleheader, allowing jackasses like me to saunter down to the 2nd row and having my friends and family see me high five perfect strangers on espn2.
Sash was chanelling Steve Nash vs Pepperdine in the ‘93 WCC Finals.
I met Herb Sendek when he was starting his career in Providence and have followed him ever since. I watch nearly every Santa Clara game and I’m so happy for the Herbivore and all the Bronco fans. Let’s finish the job tonight.
Very cool of him to show up in the comments on instagram on a few posts after the game.
I had a sinking feeling that we were going to ‘dance’ by sneaking into Dayton with our ‘big’ win being a game against SMC in January that - no offense to the folks here - no one really noticed. And then lose. So we would break the ‘streak,’ so to speak, but not really feel like we were part of the broader dance.
Now, we’ve got a fun March memory already, and we are trending toward no Dayton or even a 10 seed.
This game made it feel like we are a part of the Madness that we earned our way in, rather than a ‘hum actually our WAB is 39 so we deserve to go.”
