2026 WCC Tournament Semifinals: SMC Gaels

I’d argue that the WAY the Broncos won (back-and-forth game not truly decided until half a minute remaining) last night might help. An end of game dagger 3 by Sash is all over social media. I have to think that has some subconscious impact on the talking heads and the selection committee members, perhaps more so than a blowout win that would not have received the same attention.

Nice to be in the “Should be in” category, but another win would allay any concerns.

Although Sash was the hero and deservedly so, I want to give a shoutout to Mahi for getting tough buckets throughout that kept us close. And good on the whole team for getting it done on the court. They have a chance to punch their ticket with a win tonight and I would love to see them send the Zags out with a loss in GU’s last WCC game.

Great point Northern. And it was Mahi’s 3 from the corner (side spin and all!) that gave us the lead in the end.

Mahi doing what he does. Keeps us in a lot of games when we can’t get out of our own way.

Was looking on YouTube for the highlight from last night… found this gem of Sash from 7yrs ago. Game winner from basically the same spot (a bit closer).

Beyond thrilled! I have been a frustrated season ticket holder for all the dark decades.

Thinking how amazing it is that this team seemed to fold and get its butt kicked in Moraga, but pulled out a W after shooting so poorly for the line, making a ton of unforced mistakes and committing so many fouls to put the Gaels on the line and allow them to set up their defense. A lot of positive unseen things helped them overcome the self inflicted wounds. A couple stood out to me.

  • Graves put every ounce of effort on the floor to defend McKeevers. Stat sheet won’t show that.
  • We only got out rebounded by 10 (not 30) and kept them at bay on the offensive boards.

Gaels were off from the arc, didn’t foul when down 2 (total head scratcher against a team that couldn’t shoot from the line), then a dumb McKeever foul and a missed defensive assignment at the end…all contributed.

But the fact that the team didn’t pack it in was amazing. That has been their achilles heel for 3 decades—never snatching the big one when needed and performing poorly in the tourney.

Fantastic!

Can anyone find a full game replay of this game on ESPN+ or anywhere? I found UOP Sunday and Gonzaga Tuesday, but not this game.

It’s not there…I spent a good deal of time looking for it.

I use YouTube TV and the SCU SMC game is in my library of NCAA games. Actually all 11 WCC tournament games are available for replay…
