25’-25’ WCC Game #17: @ St. Mary’s

The Los Altos move was a new one for me. Thanks for sharing. My wife, another Bronco grew up in SF in St Mary’s Park where the streets were named after various Christian Brothers. St Marys Pub a watering hole up the street from their home. COP at Bellarmine I was aware of. Interesting how close the two schools were at that time.

St. Mary’s Pub is better than what remains of their Oakland campus - St. Mary’s Cemetery! I think Moraga suits SMC’s vision as a bucolic ‘College’ and being lured there by the Irvine Company is probably better than their original plan - moving to San Leandro.

I highly recommend Fr. McKevitt’s University of Santa Clara: A History.

The name gives you an idea of when it was written, so it may be hard to find at this point. The South Bay feels “newer” than the City or East Bay in so many ways, but Santa Clara’s campus truly is the most historic.

Now hopefully we can revert to this historical norm - Beating the Gaels!

I hope Allen can go - I have also been patiently awaiting the ‘Thierry Darlan Game’ whenever that might come to pass. He’s clearly got the frame and hints of lots of talent. He could really confound the Gaels, who seemed a little out-athelete’d last time against SCU.

@getnashty Thanks for those fun facts, I didn’t know about any of them. Regarding the confusingly named “St. Mary’s College High School”, down here in San Diego there used to be a similarly confusing “University of San Diego High School” that was just across the street from the USD campus. Alumni of “Uni” high school included the great Phil Mickelson, and the not so great Scott Peterson. About 20 years ago they moved the campus north, closer to where most of their students were commuting from, and changed its name to “Cathedral High School”. But I digress.

We need to best SMC while they’re still around. Tuition revenue fell from $90 million in 2019 to $60 million in 2023 as they enrolled 25% fewer students. They recently issued $110 million in bonds and received a BBB rating by Finch - one notch above a junk rating. Their endowment is roughly 1/8 the size of SCU’s. Maybe they can turn the ship around, but there’s lots of macro pressure on small colleges like SMC.

What do they plan on doing with the $110 million? And what is the collateral for the bonds?

Archbishop Mitty had to buy the College back as it was auctioned off on the Courthouse steps in the 1930s… (at least that’s the apocryphal tale - this article tells it slightly differently, but they certainly defaulted on a bond issuance before).

The Bay Area is better for Saint Mary’s existence and I hope they figure it out - as above, they’ve had to do it before. I think the East Bay needs these durable institutions doing good work now more than ever.

I stay in touch with the news in Denver and I saw our new conference mate, the University of Denver, is facing a big budget shortfall, too.

I suppose SCU is in a stronger position but I would doubt we’re immune.

Bond proceeds are intended to fund campus improvements, refund existing debt and support working capital amid declining enrollment and revenue. Source of repayment is the school’s general revenue.

Graves is warming up

When do we find out about Graves’ official status for tonight?

Based on the parking situation, this must be a sellout or right close. Pretty great for an 8 pm tip.

Lots of good stuff for the Broncos but we have to shore up the defensive rebounding.

SMC w/ 8 offensive rebs to our 7 def rebs…..that’s terrible and not sustainable.

Let’s hear it for whatever pain meds they gave Allen for his ankle.

No show 1st half from Hammond and Mahi

4 made baskets combined from our entire starting 5 in the first half. Probably lucky to be down 6.

Would love to see at least some minor D adjustments.
Hopefully speeding up SMC pays some late game dividends.

First three shots of the half in and out… so frustrating

Defensive rebounding absolutely killing us. Can’t give SMC multiple chances.

And now TO’s and squandered fast break opportunities and they’re up 12 just like that.

A 19-2 run. Something’s gotta change.
