'25-'26 WCC Game #8: Saint Mary's

If you want some gaels tears (and a million pop up ads) to inject see the link above. Overall they felt the refs didn’t call enough fouls to our physicality and they missed too many shots.

Postgame from Herb and Christian:

We have long complained about these games being too physical. Tonight, it was the other way. What a change of pace.

Their board is pretty active but I cannot stand to visit it with all the pop ups.

Now we need SMC to beat up on Gonzaga.

Yup. Us beating SMC, actually turned the Gaels into a Quad 2 win at the moment :joy::upside_down_face:

I went through all 104 of their posts. The pre-game posts were typical rah-rah banter, not too different from what we do here. In game, during the 12-0 run, they were literally posting after every single basket. After the game, they were deflated - a bit of complaining about refs allowing SCU to play physical, but most of their critique was about their players missing a lot of shots. Also some chatter about needing to beat Gonzaga at least once and win out against the rest in conference play to have a chance to make it to the tourney as an at-large.

It was an entertaining read, but to be honest, it was fairly restrained compared to Gonzaga message boards. That’s a cesspool.

Oh, and yes, the Gaels message board is polluted with pop-up and embedded ads. Awful user experience.

Very grateful to have such a well mannered and well run board here. And very grateful for that great team win last night. Go Broncos!!

I have to imagine that if you create an account, those miserable ads go away. On a mobile device, it’s close to unusable.

I think our board and SMC’s are almost exclusively alumni and the occasional parent. Gonzaga’s prolonged success has attracted all sorts of folks whose only affiliation with the school is watching a basketball team that they expect to win 25+ each year… the vibe is different.

Hard not to be excited about that win. Would love to defend Leavey all year, i.e., snag the Zags, which is more feasible if they lack Ike and Huff.

The Bronco fan in me knows that a road WCC loss lurks somewhere out there (in addition to a likely one in Moraga). But perhaps not.

Does SMC beating GU and us in Moraga create some sort of compounding net ranking fly-wheel, so to speak?

The best part about last night’s win is the Broncos don’t play again until Saturday. So there shouldn’t be an emotional letdown if the next game was 48 hours later. Everyone gets to recover after a physical game. Hopefully there’s nothing serious with Mahi’s ankle that rest won’t take care of.

I do find it humorous tho that we’ve all been saying the Broncos needed a Quad 1 victory and then the win they get knocks the Gaels down to a Quad 2. The universe is nothing if not funny

Shot chart per ESPN. SCU did a great job forcing SMC into low percentage shots, obviously helped a bit by the Gaels being cold from three.

The game was reminiscent of a pre-three point game in terms of the spacing and physicality. It was also notable in seeing Broncos resilience in a situation where they’ve sometimes unraveled in the past. I enjoyed seeing Bukky and Graves both on the floor during crunch time. I agree with Landon that the week off should minimize the possibility of a letdown and let bodies heal up after a true brawl.

Hammond continues to impress.

Lo and behold, SMC back to #30 and a Q1 win for the Broncos!
