'25 NIT Game 1: UC Riverside (Part Deux)

Tip-off: Tuesday, 8pm, @ Leavey
TV: ESPNU
Line: Torvik- Broncos -15.8, 90% win probability ESPN- Broncos -10.5, 90.2% win prob

Riverside:
You may remember the Highlanders from the 42-point shellacking that the Broncos dispensed in Leavey earlier this season. But that may not be totally the right impression to lead with. Per Torvik, the Broncos put on one of their best games of the year that night, while the Highlanders quietly went on to amass 21 wins and finish 3rd in a fairly strong Big West. They played BYU tight in Provo, beat Colorado State on the road, and claimed a win against both of the Big West’s darlings this season, UC Irvine and UC San Diego (soon to be WCC teams? I can only hope.)

The Highlanders are not exactly a stellar team. Perhaps not even a very good one. But there’s enough talent here to beat the Broncos on a bad night. And after the Pepperdine debacle, who are we to underestimate an opponent?

Starters:

  • 6-0 guard Barrington Hargress (20.6 pts, 4.0asts, 32.7% from 3)
  • 6-1 guard Isaiah Moses (12.2pts, 3.0assists, 36.1% from 3)
  • 6-3 guard Nate Pickens (9.7pts, 3.5rebs, 39.5% from 3)
  • 6-9 forward Kaleb Smith (11.1pts, 4.1rebs, 33.3% from 3)
  • 6-10 center Joel Armotrading (5.8pts, 6.6rebs, 1.2 blocks)

Main Bench:

  • 6-5 wing Niyi Olabode (4.8pts, 4.3rebs)
  • 6-9 forward Rickus Schulte (3.7pts, 3.4rebs)

Hargress is a volume shooter who can and will pull up from anywhere. His 3P percentage has fallen over the season, probably as more teams play him tight on the perimeter. But like Moe Odum or Lamar Washington, you have to be ready for him to jump stop into shooting motion from any part of the floor.

There is little that the Highlanders do particularly well. They do not turn the ball over a lot, perhaps because they are a team that likes to use isolation with their best players, especially Hargress. They have a pretty low assist rate, indicating minimal ball movement. This will be a game for SCU to work on its on-ball defense and help. Hargress really is the key here–no other player on UC Riverside is at all likely to beat the Broncos, but Hargress could do it on his own. He dropped 40 in the upset of UCSD, for example.

The Broncos need to dominate the glass and play for lots of second-chance points. They actually gave up 16 offensive boards earlier in the season when these two met, but the Broncos shot so well that it barely registered. SCU cannot plan to shoot better than 50% from three every game and need a good plan to work the ball inside and win at the rim. Setting aside the actual front court, players like Mahi and Bryan are the future of the program and are much bigger and stronger than the guards and the wings for UC Riverside. They should be able to score at the rim or draw fouls to open up the perimeter.

Prediction: Broncos decide they want to make the most of this opportunity, 89-74. Mahi gets 23.

Our players are bigger than UCR’s players at basically every position. Armotrading, the center from London, is on his 3rd team in 3 years (one year at JC College of Southern Idaho, then Cal Poly, then UCR). His weight isn’t listed on the UCR website, but his Cal Poly profile from last year says he is 225. Tilly is listed at 240 lbs and Tilly is taller. BANG, CHRISTOPH, BANG! Kaleb Smith only scored 4 pts on 2 of 12 shooting in 21 minutes of play against us earlier in the season. And our guards should dominate theirs. Given our size advantage at pretty much every position, this seems like a game where Tilly (or Bukke if he gets any PT) could front Armotrading on defense, assuming our guards are smothering theirs.

The Highlanders made an abysmal 4 threes in 31 shot attempts…13%! I didn’t see this game, so I can only assume that our guards were defending theirs tightly…did anyone watch that game who can either confirm or deny?

Hopefully this game draws a crowd (though it is a Tuesday night).

Broncos take this one 91 - 69.

Something to keep your eye on in tonight’s game. Adama aggravated his calf in practice so will have to see how he moves

Edit: Adama is out

I hate to say it, but it might be a net positive. He is too sloppy with the ball.

Embarrassing attendance at Leavey.

This camera angle is awful.

Weeknight 8 pm games are horrible. Even SMC struggles to get close to capacity. That said, it’s gonna take a lot to get the students engaged in an NIT game. Maybe if the Broncos win one more after this…

And as the official message board for the “diehards,” I think we can acknowledge that the last three decades have killed off the standard issue college sports diehards and left only us, the true blue masochists.

I’m thinking it’s more like “Keating”

Nice edit. Great minds (or perhaps disparaged hearts) think alike.

Finals week…that doesn’t help student attendance.

It’s Finals week so if the Broncos advance the Saturday/Sunday game will have no students cuz Spring Break.
I believe the NIT dictates home teams are not allowed to have floor seats

“Syracuse of the West”

How many attempted dunks have we missed this year?

Even before the miss, I don’t get why the end-of-clock plan is always an iso possession with Carlos or sometimes Bal. The Three Man Weave guys have identified this as a trend through all of college basketball. I’m glad Carlos at least took this one to the hoop, but I can’t believe that we can’t draw up something a little more dynamic for the last 20 seconds of a half. Probably the most creative end-of-half play this season was the failed pick-and-roll between Mahi and Tilly at the end of regulation against OSU. And that was bad too!

If that was an official stat, I’m guessing we’d be in the top-10 (bottom-10?) in the nation.

If we are talking actual quantity, I’m guessing it would be about the same as the number of disastrous inbound plays from under the basket.

It’s not just end of clock… it’s every possession. I’m just not a fan of the pro style offense or defense Sendek employs (rather loosely). It just seems like lazy coaching to me.

Sendek better not get another contract extension.
