I can remember going to the Cable Car UAB / Santa Clara game in Toso, Dec 1991 during Christmas Break. Not sure if it was on local Bay Area TV at the time (i.e. KICU Action 36). Field was UAB, Boston College, and West Virginia - legit!!
I sometimes wonder whether sustained success is in fact possible given that, even when we are moderately good, no one gives a rip. See above unsold seats - the rest of the arena looks about the same.
Santa Clara, San Mateo and Alameda County have together like 4 million people in them. I think our posted attendance for the first NIT game was… 672. That’s like two dorms, some staff and the players parents.
An observation I’ve learned these past four years is that Santa Clara (the city) and surrounding communities just are not competitive Sports Minded. We get MORE attendance at my Granny Basketball games in Oakdale CA.
Move the University to Newton MA and stadium would be sold out.
Oakdale is a great place and a more attractive place to live to my way of thinking than is present Santa Clara Valley. i spent nearly the first 40 years of my life in SC but did not like the growth and left for greener pastures. Growing up in SC was growing up in an extremely sportsminded town. Think Santa Clara Swim Club, high school sports, Briarwood LL, SC Colts, the '62 Bronco baseball program, the late 60 success of our SCU basketball program and more recently the Nash years. There were many sport successes and much to follow and there was less conflict. As has been said many times on this forum there is simply a lot to do for people of all ages. I will throw in something else. We used to be known as Blossom Valley based upon our agricultural hereitage. While I spent 7 years at the U the tranformation to the Silicon Valley exploded. Not to sound xenophobic but the population has simply changed in the area as has the nature of the area.
SCU doesn’t really do a good job getting meaningful local coverage. When the NIT bracket was announced, KNBR tweeted out that USF had made it and were hosting. Granted KNBR broadcasts their games so that’s to be expected, but USF having that kind of exposure matters.
Meanwhile SCU is struggling to draw eyeballs and coverage in their own backyard. With the Sharks still tanking, the Quakes still struggling with their own relevance, and Bay FC just starting out, you could make the argument that SCU men’s basketball should be the best sports team in Santa Clara county this month and yet…..here we are. Most people that live here probably don’t even realize we have a game this weekend.
Making matters worse for tomorrow’s game attendance…SCU is now on Spring Break.
Doubt we’ll have much a student section at all. And I’m sure there’s at least a small number of faculty and staff who often attend games but may have Spring Break travel plans.
Among other things, SCU needs to tap into local culture and make themselves into the team for the South Bay area or at least for Santa Clara, San Jose, and Sunnyvale. It will always be a challenge with Stanford and SJSU occupying the same space. USF gets to be the only D1 school in its city and can always press that advantage. But SMC does a pretty good job owning its little domain in Concord, Walnut Creek, and La-Mo-Rinda. Folks I know with no connection to SMC that live in that area nevertheless follow the Gaels a bit and find themselves at a game or two each season. And that’s with Cal being just over the hill/through the tunnel. Albeit, this is only since the Bennett era, so success is a major factor in building that interest.
SCU is the original school in CA, let alone the South Bay. Stanford stole SCU’s architectural style. And the ACC schools are likely to be hard pressed to keep up with football expenditures rising and opponents from the other coast. So there may never be a better time to try to recreate SCU’s footprint.
Being part of the cultural zeitgeist is much easier said than done, but it should be a major priority of the Athletic Dept.
Well, I for one hope they find a way to get a larger “draw” to the games. They are exciting and the facility is gorgeous. MAYBE try to do a little better with the food concessions though? Hoping for continued growth for the program.
