Damian Lillard isn’t shabby…
Draymond Green
CJ McCollum
Malcom Brogdon
Grayson Allen
Austin Reaves
Buddy Hield
Brandon Clarke (4 years counting RS season)
Doug McDermott (now in about his 10th year)
Kelly Olynyk (4yrs in college counting his RD) - now 11 year pro
Let’s give this its own thread. I’ll make one now.
Thanks Patty! I figured you would sort this out.
Patty only played two years I believe.
Podz garnered four 3rd place votes in Rookie of the Year voting and finished 5th overall.
Wembanyama was unanimous winner with all 99 1st place votes.
Chet Holmgren, 2nd place with all but one of the 2nd place votes.
Brandon Miller was 3rd. Then a big drop to Jaime Jaquez with 10 3rd place votes.
Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama voted unanimous Rookie of Year - ESPN
After a slow start, Jalen made huge contributions in the fourth quarter last night to help OKC seal the game. Fun to watch him.
Podz makes All Rookie First Team. Given he was fifth in ROY vote, I guess it was to be expected, but cool nonetheless.
Congratulations!
So…
-A WCC player is the runner-up rookie of the year in back-to-back seasons.
-2 of 5 on this season’s first team are WCC players.
-3 of 5 this season are from West Coast colleges.
Yes, small sample size but still flies in the face of the typical ‘Power-6’ and East Coast supremacy narratives.
FWIW…Article from the SJ Merc’s Kurtenbach imploring the Ws to include Podz in a trade to Utah for Lauri Markkanen.
The Warriors look poised to make the two-timelines mistake again (mercurynews.com)
The essence of it is that Lauri is the second scorer that the Ws need. Podz is a great swiss army knife, but that isn’t critical now and can be found when needed.
I don’t know enough about the NBA player market and trade machinations to have a formed opinion other than its been nice to have Podz close and I wish him any opportunity where he can flourish.
What Weave said, adding that while I’ve been. A Dubs fan since the 60’s, I will follow the Jazz, like I do the Thunder.
Hello
The last NBA season where two players named “Bronco” scored points was 1998-1999, with Steve Nash and a player who may be less well-known.
You might be thinking of the 1999 season when Steve Nash and Marlon Garnett (also known as Marlon Garnett, though not widely recognized) played in the NBA.
JWill is avg 17-7-6 early on in this young NBA season for a championship-hopeful Thunder team.
Podz is avg 10-5-4 and is amongst the highest +/- in the league.
Both continue to surprise me with how well they’ve adapted to the nba.
Meanwhile, Keshawn Justice has been in an on again off again relationship with the Jazz g league affiliate, just resigned with them a couple days ago.
In other news we still have a couple abroad players.
Willie Caruso is now an end of the bench player for Milan - historically the best team in Italy.
Vrankic is one of the leading contributors on a second tier Spanish team in San Sebastián.
Brownridge is now in his 7th season with the 76ers g league affiliate.
Raymond Cowells III is playing in the polish league for a mid-table team. He has been on a worldwide tour since he graduated - playing for teams in NZ, France, Finland, g league, and the last 3 years in Poland.
May be missing a couple others but this is what I could track down.
Good stuff, Midwest!
The production from JWill and Podz can only help the recruiting/portal pipeline.
For Vrankic, living in San Sebastián would be an added reward. Marvelous town. Spain loves their hoops, too. I saw a Barcelona game there and the atmosphere was akin to a college tournament game— electric.
Always fun to see what old Broncos are doing. There are many that have had fairly long careers overseas.
Some others currently playing that I’ve tracked down, I’m sure there are a few others:
- Carlos Marshall - currently playing for an Israeli team, Elitzur Netanya
- PJ Pipes- On roster for Bursapor. league: Turkish - BSL (not sure what tier or level it is but he’s played in the EuroCup which I believe is either top or 2nd tier).
- 37 year old John Bryant is still playing, currently for Weissenfels in the German BBL. Bryant has had an outstanding pro career. It would be very cool to get him on some sort of podcast to hear more about the details of his career, reflections on SCU, etc.
- KJ Feagin - played for Knox Raiders of the Australian NBL; their season is Spring/Summer for us.
- Tahj Eaddy - playing in Croatia for KK Cedevita Jr Zagreb.
- Trey Wertz - BK Redstone in the the Czech Republic
And Marc Trasolini just wrapped up a ~9 year overseas career playing his last few seasons in Japan, most recently in 2022; had some very good seasons in Italy earlier in his career.
Great adds! I was a little biased towards broncos that finished their career at Scu. Can’t believe Bryant is still going.
I’m with you Midwest…debated leaving Tahj and Trey off the list.
KJ spent 4 years at SCU and is a graduate/alum so IMO deserves to be included.
Anyone have a guess as to the longest post-college career of any Bronco? I think we established that Nash was the longest NBA career (18 seasons, so almost 40 years old?). Bryant has to be getting close to that?
I’d be surprised if any Bronco played longer than Nash.
Bryant is 37, graduated in '09 so 15year career so far. Can’t imagine he has much left especially for a very big bodied guy, you’d think his body would start to break down.
Another Bronco that wasn’t far behind is Doron Perkins, played 13 seasons until he was 35. Also an outstanding career, was MVP of multiple leagues and played in the top leagues in Europe. He had a chance with the Lakers out of college; story I heard is he outplayed UCLA’s Jordan Farmar during training camp. Farmar was a rookie or 2nd year but Farmar was on a guaranteed contract and Lakers had no roster spots open and Perkins was one of the final cuts. Convinced he could have had a decent career in the NBA but he probably made solid money playing in the top Euro leagues.
