Carlos is playing very sloppy with the ball
YES! Fouls from 50 ft out and then a turnover after resorting in a quick close to the gap!!! We need to be smarter than that. Letās chalk to first game jitters and will work out mental kinks so as not to put ourselves in a bind like that again.
We had little to no production from key players today - so when they come on board, this will be an exciting team to watch.
Side question: Watching Avila twist his ankle (apparently for the second time in a month), why donāt players in this modern era wear high-tops? They are specifically designed to protect the ankles
Great win! Best of luck along the way for SLU.
Only 12 TOs against 8 steals and 15 offensive boards. Iāll take that 100%.
If we took Ensinger (his 3s did not look good), OāNeill and Stewart out of the equation today, we would have been shooting 50% from the 3. Those three went 0 for 16 and we still won, thatās amazing.
Upon further inspection, SLU was receiving 9 votes in the AP Poll.
Our next opponent, ASU is receiving 2 votes in the AP Poll, which I find vaguely bizarre given they were picked to finish 12 in the Big 12 (which is, of course, not last place because there are 16 teams in the Big 12).
That said, the Big 12 is absolutely murderous after the recent realignment - it has Kansas (#1), Houston (#4), Iowa State (#5), Baylor (#8), Arizona (#10), Cincy (#20), with Texas Tech, Kansas State, BYU, and ASU receiving at least some votes. So, 3 of the top 5, and 5 of the top 10, and 10 teams ranked or receiving votes. And I wouldnāt really want to play Colorado or a few of the other squads in their gyms, either.
SLUās go-forward schedule, except a game with Wichita State, is pretty weak. Hopefully they can avoid a slip up, especially if Avila misses time.
We, by contrast, really scheduled for an at-large. And we took a step today. Go Broncos.
There was a huge seperation of talent and depth in todays game. As I see it this is the deepest and most talented SCU team in the past 25 years.
Totally agree Femme on that charge call. But I think we got a make up call shortly thereafter. Congrats to Cam on one of his best games ever as a Bronco!
Thanks for that affirmation.
Reading between the linesā¦If we canāt Dance this year, it could be another 30 years.
Nice way to start the season, especially with a long trip and an early start. One thing I liked, in addition to all the positive notes already mentioned, was that there wasnāt any panic when SLU made their runs. Though I was a little worried that Swope would drill a couple more 35 footers there at the end.
Off to Vegas for ASU on Friday. Hope to see some of you there!
Solid 1st game. Cam was fantastic. Bal and Tilly with good games, Bryan and Mahi solid as well. The othersā¦not so much.
Net advantages in TOās (+5) and offensive rebounds (+6) translates to +11 possessions. Critical in a 7pt win.
Cam mostly played the 5, would like to see him get minutes at the 4. Was more or less only OāNeil and Ensminger at the 4 and they shot 0/8.
Best postgame comment!
Donāt think they plan to use Cam at the 4 at all. Graves is redshirt this year. Along with Hammond. So Cam will have to play the entire season out of position.
Iād LOVE to see the law firm of Tilly and Tongue return on the floor at the same time. They were fantastic as sophomores playing side by side.
I poked around the SLU site after the game. They admitted Santa Clara āwasnāt chopped liverā¦ā
One takeaway is that we beat a pretty good team with 2 current and 1 former starter from last season playing over 60 minutes with 2 points between themā¦Thatās a good sign.
That said we took 35 threes when we had a number of matchup advantages.
I love Jake but heās not a 3 ball scorer and OāNeill is streaky but not
consistent. At 6ā10 he could have used his size advantage better.
Carlos had 5 assists but looked like he was trying to do too much.
With Hammond redshirting we need stronger guard play to make a run in the WCC with the Zags, Gaels and USF having premier guards.
Good start. Our depth performed and Cam showed his best yet.
Great to see!
Gonzaga trounced Baylor today. St Marys beat Towson and LMU won their game. So far WCC came to play today.
Yes, Gonzaga blew Baylor outā¦but I did get a bit of joy seeing Mark Fewās son get postered by a Baylor player:
I was really impressed with how much stronger Adama looked. It appears he put on a lot of muscle in the off-season. Good job by him and the strength staff.
