Game 7: UC Irvine

Gonzaga looked worse than SCU, but was playing a worse opponent and so they still won.

Could be that teams need more rest during the early part of the season then schedules tend to give them.

On the subject of depth, Zeke Richards appears to have found a pretty good fit at Northern Arizona. Their team is not very good but he is giving them a productive 15 minutes per game as he averages 7.5 pts. Amazingly, he is 15-16 from the foul line. Trent Hudgens has only appeared in one game for Northern Colorado. Not sure if he is injured or just not part of the rotation. Trey Wertz is off to a slow start at Notre Dame this year as freshman Blake Wesley takes up a lot of the usage. In a perfect world, would have been fun watching J. Williams, Pipes, Justice, Wertz play kind of position-less basketball and shoot lots of 3s with Vrankic finding open shooters and Braun/Bediako crashing the boards. Shaq Walters is still playing college basketball for Northeastern. Averaging 13pts and 6 rebounds but is a turnover machine.

I watched the ND-St. Mary’s game, and I’ll tell you that Wertz was a liability. He made a couple of huge mistakes in the last 2 minutes of the game that arguably cost ND the game. I wish him well at ND and beyond, but I’m not sorry that he left SCU.

How can I triple love Bob’s comment about G-Will? He needs to be an off-ball wing (big 2/small 3 type) who is constantly in motion looking for catch-and-shoot opportunities. Unfortunately, the last couple of games he’s trying to be a PG, and I don’t think it’s working. The turnovers/points ratio must be really low, I’d guess, when he has control of the ball on the dribble. Don’t get me wrong, I like him and thinks he has an important seat on the bus with this squad, I just don’t think dribble-penetrate is his game.

Agree Buckets.
Look at it this way…Pipes probably doesn’t come here if Wertz is still around as the incumbent point guard. IMO, we’re better off this season with Pipes at the helm vs. if Wertz was still around.

Wertz was never a point guard… why Herb tried to force him to be one is just beyond reason (he’s kind of a guy that doesn’t really fit into any defined position, although Noob did use one of his many screen names to call Wertz a God). E Richards was solid in the brief seconds that Herb played him… perhaps the lack of depth these last 6 years is simply the fact that Herb decides on a short list to play and they rest never get a shot.

For my thinking if you’re going to go to the trouble to give a guy a scholarship you should at least give him some playing time to evaluate what he can contribute… practice and games are such different animals.

IMO, Wertz made a mistake by leaving. Brey has been stealing money for about the last 5 years. Can’t imagine he would have done it if he knew how things were going to be now. Unfortunate for all concerned.

I love how people are rewriting history. He was one of it not the team’s most talented player when he was at SCU.

Good to see bettererer not wasting any time getting his knives some work. I’m sure you would be more than understanding if the coach took a little league “everybody plays” approach and lost games because of it. Because that definitely seems like you. Mmmhmmm.
