It’s interesting to read their board… there is a certain level of vitriol towards us - considering they’ve comfortably had the upper hand for 15+ years. Maybe it’s the academics, resources and generally better brand awareness that is envied.
This is probably a 1A but more likely a 1B rivalry for me.

It’s going to be a slog offensively, have to embrace it and settle down
First 5 offensive possessions: 3 turnovers, 1 shot blocked and an Ensminger 3 pointer….not exactly a roadmap for success.
A better start than last years home SMC game. Still turning this into a rock fight suits SMC.
Two 3pointers by Hardaway is found money for SMC.
We’re getting lots of layup chances, though contested, and Off rebounds but not converting on either. Can’t waste opportunities vs SMC.
Certainly wish the entire team was this engaged defensively every game.

Down just 2 at half.
But could be up by 4 to 6; we left a lot of points out there on missed layups and not converting on off rebound 2nd chance opportunities. And take full advantage of Saxen sitting more than usual w/ fouls.
We’ll see how 2nd half plays out but may regret the missed 1st half opportunities.
Need to keep attacking the basket.
And hopefully we continue to press at least part time. SMC seems a little uncomfortable against it and if nothing else it burns shot clock and reduces the time they have to run their methodical offense.

Rebounding and toughness just died in the second half. Absolute wilting by the Broncos. Gonzaga tests your skill, but SMC tests your toughness. Santa Clara not the tougher team yet again.

26-24 at half becomes 50-24. 24-0 run to start the half, at home, against the arch rival.
I like Herb, seems Iike a good guy - but he’s clearly not the guy.
End over end talent is higher than the Keating era, but winning when it matters has never been there… even the good ones, like @GU, are random unexpected wins.
I love Santa Clara - I don’t play this one much, but I’m a fifth generation Bronco. When my great-great-grandfather was there, they were just introducing hoops (1906). We’ve collectively literally seen it all. And this ain’t it.
Praying for more for our broncos - this ain’t it.

Randy Bennett is the best coach in the conference and it’s not even close IMO. Mark Few has more talent and is churning out NBA prospects, but Bennett does far more with less and finds the right pieces to fit his style, lock down defense, physical and mental toughness, court awareness, etc…
Bennett can be annoying and a hothead but he’s playing chess, and Herb is playing checkers.
