WCC Game 15: Portland

Plus they bring enough bodies to fill the student section!

Who is this doing play-by-play on the video feed? I like AP, but this guy is really enthusiastic!

Big 4th foul on Robertson. He was clearly sliding.

Pipes has been playing like a legit ALL WCC player the last 6 games. He really “found” it.

67 pts from our Seniors today!!! I don’t think that Senior day record will be broken any time soon.

Such a beautiful second half of offensive basketball we played.

And props to the Pilots. I thought the USF games might have been outliers for them but I was really impressed by their offense. They can definitely beat any non Gonzaga teams in the WCC tournament.

From Rocco Miller on twitter…

Reminder: The WCC will use KenPom's ACWP model to seed teams once again for the conference tournament.

Per sources, the Top 5 seeds will be:

1. Gonzaga
2. Saint Mary's
3. Santa Clara
4. San Francisco
5. BYU

Top 2 are set. This assumes a BYU win over Pepperdine tonight.#WCC

Great week with two big wins! Congrats to our seniors as Josip, PJ, and Keshawn all played really well today. I agree, Portland is no slouch especially on offense. They are capable of beating anyone outside of GU.

I know we have our eye on the big prize this next coming week in Vegas, but have to think we have done enough to secure NIT bid.

And TCU beat #9 Texas Tech today.

I know USF wasn’t a bad loss on paper but it was like backwash in a glass, a dingleberry in the ____ or bile in the throat loss. Hard to take in person.

Love being able to give my spokane SCU classmates a little ribbing over this loss. Doubly good given they are football alums and hate St mary’s.

Phew, a loss today would’ve felt to all here like an absolute gut punch. But now we get to dream for another week that we have the smallest outside chance at a couple wins in the tourney.

Did any of us predict or expect a top 3 wcc finish? I feel like most of us said our ceiling was 4th place.

I certainly didn’t. And if I could have seen, in advance, the current computer rankings on Gonzaga through BYU, I don’t think I would have picked Santa Clara to finish higher than 5th. The WCC is the strongest it has been in 30 some years. It will have three NCAA teams and may have four. Yet SCU finishes third, ahead of at least one at-large. Pretty cool.

Another Q1 win with TCU moving into the top 50,

weird that SCU didn’t bump up in NET after a 100 point game!

I didn’t expect it either, although I did feel from the early part of the season that this team had the talent to do so and challenge for an at-large bid. Right now they look like that team we saw at the start of the year. High powered offense can overcome many mistakes. I’d love to see them make a run at the WCC tourney title and at the very least secure and NIT invite. They are good enough to contend.

Yeah, redandwhite, I am shocked that SCU did not move up in the NET rankings. The Gaels didn’t move up, either, despite the convincing win against the Bulldogs. Yet, USF moved up, and BYU dropped back two spots. Definitely a headscratcher to me.

I don’t see any confirmation of seedings yet from the WCC.

Portland’s NET is mediocre; beating them doesn’t really help us in the NET and waters down the benefit of TCU moving up. And as the season nears the end there are more data points for the NET so you’re less likely to see significant moves up or down.

I think BYU is a bit of a paper tiger…their solid NET is riding the coattails of their strong non-con schedule and performance…they aren’t playing that well now.

Re: finishing 3rd…BYU faltering in league plus USF losing to Portland and coughing up double digit 2nd half leads to BYU and SMC opened the door for us. Hard to argue we’re better than USF since they beat us twice (one a beatdown) but we took care of business with no losses to anyone 5th place or worse.

3rd place instead of 4th helps…better to play someone like USD or Portland in our first game instead of BYU then likely SMC in the semifinal instead of GU.

I was figuring that our wins vs. SMC and TCU would’ve outcalculated the Pilots low NET. As I understand it, a win against a Quad3 or Quad4 doesn’t help you, but also doesn’t hurt you. But a win against Quad1 helps.

I guess without knowing the EXACT algorithm of the NET ranking, it is just idle speculation.
