Kevin- looks like good home screen material.
Great game by BK and, of course, Bal. Something is wrong with Marshall and heās becoming a turnover machine. He started, but came out after only 3 minutes. His total time on the court was only 17 minutes. We may see Bryan moved into the starting lineup.
Agree on Knapper. Bal was the hero but Knapper was the revelation.
I disagree on doubling Watson somewhat. Or at least I am more neutral. SCU has gotten burned so many times by doubling a Zag down low and giving them a wide open three pointer. Watson was nearly unstoppable, but he had to work hard for most of his shots (except the lazy box outs down the stretch where he got an offensive board). Now GU is pretty bad from three this year, but they were exceptionally bad this game. I get how that might make you double Watson but with the game that close and expecting some mean reversion to happen, I probably would play it exactly as they did. Gamble that itās less likely that Watson makes enough tough shots to win and keep your defenders on the perimeter to prevent more dangerous, momentum-shifting threes.
On offense, they were using a lot more sets than usual which resulted in much better ball movement and some really good looks. There was still too much iso ball, especially by CMJ, but the improvement in scheme was noticeable.
Broncos out-assisted the Zags 21 - 8. Weāre usually the single digit assist team! Maybe weāre on to something here.
[Deleted initial link ā I screwed up the link and posted the LMU post game instead]
Hereās the actual post game presser
Sendek on Brenton Knapper
also, WHAT A WIN WAHOOO. RUSHING THE COURT WAS INSANE
I agree with Letās Go Broncos comment on the assist differential last night. I thought the Broncos passed the ball last night better than any other game this season. They were scanning the floor, finding the open man. Yes, there were many self inflicted turnovers and they really struggle inbounding the ball, but I also saw a weakness in their offense become a strength last night.
Keep it going Broncos!
Iāll be Captain Obvious. Great game!!! This game the team that beat Oregon, WSU, and Stanford showed up. Loved the effort on the boards. The turnovers nearly killed us and if we donāt improve on that SMC will beat us. The best atmosphere at SCU in years. Putting the students on the sideline was an excellent idea and for once the. students came out and cheered like crazy. Reminded me of the good ole days. Very good to honor Steve Nash and have Williams and Davies there with him. Hope we can take the momentum from this and also beat USF and SMC. This game also proves what many said before, Gonzaga is having a down year. First half could not buy a three I think 1 for 11 or so. Glad Mark Few will have to go somewhere else for win #700. Proud to be a Bronco!! GO BRONCOS!!!
Great to finally get a W against Gonzaga.
Still, that very much looked like the team that squeeked one out at LMU and needed some amazing buckets to grab a win at Pepp. Loved the agressive rebounding (finally), but both teams made way too many miscues.
Grab a win against SMC and this starts getting interesting.
Letās hope our boys donāt rest on their laurelsā¦and hoping that Carlos gets well, he was clearly fighting some bug last night.
Gonzaga got punished for this loss by Torvik ratings: dropped all the way down to #47. SCU moved up to #100.
That coupled with one of their best wins (ucla) getting beat by 40 last night didnāt help
Zags are going to have to make some big time lineup changes if they expect any measurable success this season. They had 3 guys score basically all of their points last night, and went 2-20 from behind the arc (and itās not like those were highly contested shots as SCUās back peddle no touch D gives tons of free looks). Then again, it kind of feels good to see Gonzaga struggle, espically when they lose to the Broncos
We just faced the 2nd-best coach (Few) in the conference, and just squeezed by. Weāll have to be smarter with the ball tomorrow night or else the best coach in the league (Bennett) and his squad are gonna eat our lunch.
Stromer and Hickman added nothing last night for GU.
GU has always had a stable of good guardsā¦ Nembhard is fine, but it is not the embarrassment of riches that they are accustomed to. I think Venters injury and Sallisā transfer hurt them gravely.
Canāt say Iām crying much though - I am having great fun watching GUBoards bicker about the NIT!
Losing to us must make them feel like the sky is falling. THE SHAME!
Can you imagine how annoyed the Gonzaga fans would be if they didnāt get a triple-bye in the WCC tourney? The horror of actually having to show up in Vegas on Saturday morning versus Monday morning.
Somewhere on there they referred to losing to us as ālosing to a mediocre mid-majorāā¦ guess what, Bulldogs - you are a mediocre mid-major (maybe not quite, but throw in a few more WCC losses and that might be apt).
I actually hope they go through okay, as them losing a few WCC games will take the fun out of it. But an NIT trip would be good. They have had far more than their fair share of WCC auto-bids in the last quarter century.
As a Spokane resident for the past 20ish years, this one is sweet.
It doesnāt make up for sitting through 50pt blowouts in McCarthy but sweet nonetheless.
Phone blowing up last night and this morning from locals and co-workers who know Iām a Bronco.
Iāll be wearing even more SCU gear around town than I normally do.
