Currently 4-2 after beating Fresno State at home. Torvik now has a women’s analytics site up which has the Broncos as the top team in the WCC in the early going:
Pretty awesome turnaround. Apparently hiring a coach named “Payne” is SCU’s path to success.
Only losses are to power conf schools, Stanford and ASU and they have dominated Mountain West Conference schools, 3-0, all 18+ pt wins: by 31 over Wyoming, by 25 over SanDiego St. and 18 over Fresno.
The ladies beat USD last night at home and move to 11-3 (9-3 against D1).
SCU has the best NET in the conference on the women’s side with a 20-spot lead over 2nd place Gonzaga. Hopefully the AD is already coming up their plan to retain Payne if this season finishes the way it has started.
The timing is perfect for the ladies to make some noise in the WCC. GU appears to be down from what they typically are….their 2-time league MVP, Yvonne Ejim, exhausted her eligibility. Oregon St. may be the other likely challenger, a strong program, frequently in the NCAA tourney.
I’ve been following the ladies a bit and have caught a few mins of games here and there on ESPN+. They rely heavily on senior 6-2 forward Sophie Glancey who followed Payne from NAU. But most of the rest of their rotation have eligibility remaining after this year including a solid freshmen class, several of whom are getting PT so there’s hope they can build on the success so far.
appreciate you guys tuning in for those games, they’re a rock solid team. Good staff, funny players (and one of your guys favorite alums on the broadcasts, i’ll be pxp tomorrow!). They’ve got a real shot to start their WCC Tourney run in the semis
The ladies are also 5-1 and remain the top team in the WCC in Torvik. They may still have to win the conference tournament to get in, but what a special season for the women so far!
It was a great win by the Lady Broncos especially after Sophie injured her elbow. That’s a huge loss for the team. Hopefully she’s not lost for the season. Didn’t see the actual injury but the announcers made it seem like it wasn’t good.
The success of the women’s team has got to put some pressure on Herb & Co.
Saw the box score and noticed Sophie Glancey only played 2mins and assumed she was hurt.
Better an elbow than the dreaded ACL (all too common in women’s hoops). Hopefully she can return at some point this season, she’s their best player so would be a challenge without her. Kudos to the squad for winning without her.
They play a decent Portland squad, a program that made a tourney appearance or two of late; if Sophie is out, it will be good test of have the team adjusts without her.
yeah the injury happened literally two minutes in, it didn’t look great from what I saw on the broadcast. One of those where you can’t necessarily tell what happened but that the facial expressions told the whole story
Gritty group to keep finding ways to win
the announcers during the game said she was also taken to a local medical facility but I can’t verify that
At the Bistro last night Cody said he went with her to the hospital. She had an MRI and X-Ray but they didn’t know the results yet. They held the charter for them so Sophie & Cody could fly back with the team.
Got win No. 21 against Saint Mary’s last night. 21-7 overall and 11-4 in the WCC. Most wins by a first year HC in WBB history and counting for Loree Payne
