NIT Selection Show is on at 7pm PST (ESPNU) with 1st round games scheduled for Tue & Wed, March 14th & 15th.
That’s another part of the NIT that can be weird. If you lose in the first round it’s over in an absolute flash.
Yep, like last year…find out Sunday evening we’re in the NIT, blown out by WSU Tuesday night. Was anticlimactic to say the least.
But first, let’s make sure we’re in…then hope for a couple of wins to make qualifying meaningful.
One more NIT spot opens up.
Dayton has decided to decline a bid to the NIT.

Kind of takes the luster off the whole thing when ‘name’ programs decline, especially a mid-major like Dayton.
Broncos ranked #84 in NET…Dayton #74, UNC #46…might help us back our way in to a #3 or 4 seed.
Might be the death knell of the NIT. Hard to believe that there was a time when the NIT was the granddaddy tournament, many decades ago.
Will the NCAA tourney just expand to 96 teams, with 1st round byes for the top 32 (I’ve been clamoring for this for years)? Or perhaps a 128-team tourney?
Broncos are in!
Sam Houston is the 2 seed but we get to host them because of an arena conflict.
Going to try to find my down for the game, this group deserves a good crowd for an NIT home game
Lucked out with the home game…now let’s take advantage of the opportunity and make some noise in this thing.
Will get a game thread up later this evening.
I’m glad that we’re in and this group truly deserves it. It appears that we were not in as solidly as first assumed and that we may have been among the last 3-4 teams chosen as an at large. Does anyone else read it that way?
I hope Leavey sells out and happy to see a home game. It’s great for the program, alums, student body, etc…
GO BRONCOS!!!
After top 16 seeded teams, the remainder are unseeded and the match teams with geographic considerations to reduce travel where they can. A little harder to do with West Coast teams.
You’ll see E. Washington at WSU (75mins apart), UCF at Florida, etc.
So hard to tell what our true ‘seed’ would have been had they seeded all teams, my guess is a 6 seed.
It’s cool they get a home game. I just don’t know how full Leavy will be. It seems hard to draw a crowd these days, but I do hope the athletic dept/admin get the students involved. Maybe find a way to entice ($$$) the undergrads to all be there?
I get UNC and even Dayton skipping the NIT. Honestly there isn’t much to really gain from it and if the kids had their hopes for the NCAA dashed and it was that or bust, it’s better to decline than show up and mail it in (which I see a # of NIT teams do every year). I hope this SCU squad has the fire in them still to go out there and get after it.
Glad they get another one. I might try to sneak down. But 6 pm weeknight games are really tough.
By the way, the NIT committee messed up the 2 & 3 seeds. Sam Houston is actually a 3 seed which perhaps makes Santa Clara less close to the cut-off than it initially appeared (notwithstanding geographic matchups like 92 mentioned).
Also, Templon thinks that Santa Clara was probably under seeded:
