Imagine Cams heart and Tilly’s build. That would be quite the player!
I said it BEFORE the game!! DEFENSE wins games. The five guys on the floor DID NOT PLAY transition defense and let San Fran pop in a THREE pointer right after going up by four!!! That was our chance to put the nail in the coffin. Hustle back - play defense and don’t allow an EASY 3 point shot!!!
They should all be embarrassed. If I were coaching I would have pulled all five off the floor and put five guys in that want to hustle.
I really question the coaching at this point. We STAYED with the same group of guys who were playing flat the last five minutes of the game. We should have mixed things up for OT. We deserved to lose that game!!!
TWO TIMES we can’t close at the free throw!!! Just sad.
Adama and Tilly will be the death of me and I’m only 23
It’s a bunch of individual basketball and not enough winning basketball. I know people know the difference
Other than Gonzaga last year I don’t know when this program has met the moment under this staff. Uncanny how you see the car crash unfold in real time. Fouling 3 pt shooters, missing GW FT’s, chucking 3’s, no ball movement.
Once again, we snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
I’m hanging this one squarely on Coach.
Carlos was dominating on his patented drives in the paint. And he was cold from outside. O’Neil was the only one consistently hitting 3-pointers. And what the heck was Tilly doing shooting 3’s? Where was the TO when Carlos needed a minute (and at that point, they could’ve used the TO anyway cuz they were disjointed)?
Shouldn’t Sendek (or maybe I should start calling him Tarlek) tell his guys what he wants to see?
Shouldn’t the refs have called one? I thought there was a timeout or inbound just before that right? Wouldnt that have been when refs should’ve stopped the game?
Thought we lost the game when we shot 64% from the floor in the first half and 54% from 3 yet were only up 2. So much of our defensive effort seems to be dictated by how we are scoring the ball. If the ball is going in for us then the defense slacks.
Pretty painful way to lose. The sequence that sent everything into overtime was killer. Thomas and Williams(?) hit unbelievable threes to keep USF alive. Then a pretty controversial call on Thomas who drains all three free throws. Then Tilly misses the front end that would have put the Broncos over almost certainly.
Don’t look now, but Torvik ranks that defensive performance even worse than Pepperdine. Oof. The offense was so good yet again but defense is killing the Broncos. It was better in the second half, but it shouldn’t have been close going into halftime.
I’d like to see the Broncos hang 100 on them in Santa Clara in two weeks…and maybe only give up 60 instead of 98.
It’s maybe not the 1970s call-the-fire-marshall-it’s-too-packed kind of rivalry game. Or not yet. But when I was at SCU, the USF game had almost totally faded from any special recognition or importance. I don’t think that’s true anymore.
To show you how tough it is to make the tournament as an At-Large from the WCC this year, USF actually dropped in NET Rating from 58 to 61 after last night’s game. I imagine their Defensive Efficiency numbers which were elite took a hit and that gets factored into NET.
The only rosy scenario I had for us making the tournament as an at large was to be a decisive #2 in WCC play. Teams 2-6 were all bunched up after non-conference play so the obvious way to create separation is to be the clear #2 team in the WCC standings . Last night seems like one you had to have for any chance of that becoming a reality.
Very disappointing. I would place this Broncos team as the most over rated and underperforming team in recent memory. The 0-16 team in league lacked talent, not so much on effort. So much hype, so little in results. No concept of defense or protecting a lead. Looks like the players are playing for individual stats and lack teamwork. Coaches recruit players but don’t run a cohesive team. Blew games against Stanford and ND State, can’t beat good teams and will be lucky to finish fifth in the WCC. Let’s hope 2025 is better than 2024 but I seriously doubt it. Not sure what might motivate these guys to play complete games on both ends of the floor.
Yeah. I agree. I wasn’t prepared to really hope until the Broncos walked into Spokane undefeated since losing to UW. That’s gone now. I would eliminate any hope of an at-large and focus on seeding. The Tournament title seems more for the taking than at any time in the past 10 seasons, so good seeding may actually matter.
If there’s any hope, here’s what has to happen. The Broncos have three Quad 3 losses as of this morning. Two of those need to change to Quad 2. That’s actually feasible but not guaranteed. UW needs to get back into the NET top-100. That seems pretty likely with their Big-10 schedule. Then either Stanford or NDSU needs to climb ten-ish spots to the top-75 (both are hanging out in the mid-80s). That’s possible for both but not necessarily probable for either.
McNeese also needs to climb into the top-75 for them to be a Quad 1 victory. That probably happens as McNeese beats up on bad conference opponents. But no guarantee.
That could get SCU to a place where they have a Quad 1 win and only a single Quad 3 loss. I actually think it’s 50/50 that happens. But then they have to still only take two more conference losses at most and rise 25-30 spots in the NET.
At a certain point, the improbable becomes too much to bother focusing on. I think it’s feasible for this team to rattle off 4 more wins before heading to Spokane, so that’s all I’m hoping for now.
Reiterating we had much going for us with who USF was missing…starter Newbury and 6th man Beasley were out, Wang (Newbury’s replacement) left early with an injury and only played 8 mins so their 3rd string freshman 4, Abosi, played 25 minutes. And Linguard had 3 fouls by mid-1st half so they had to limit and manage his minutes (he only played 16 mins in a 45 min game) the rest of the game so freshman O’Donnell filled in with 24mins.
So USF played three true freshmen (Riley, Abosi, O’Donnell) in their frontcourt for the majority of the game. Meanwhile our veteran laden couldn’t beat a bunch of freshmen. Obviously Williams and Thomas played great and carried them but good teams don’t lose to two players.
Our rotation is entirely at least 3rd year players (Tilly and Ensminger) and mostly 4th or 5th year players (everyone else). Combined with a veteran and supposedly genius coach. You’d think all that experience would count for something and lead to smarter and better late game decisions and execution and clutch play. But…it didn’t and hasn’t. Instead we foul 3 point shooters twice in the 2nd half, jack up unnecessary contested 3’s instead of running some semblance of an offense fail to attach their freshmen bigs at the basket, miss key FT’s and generally just fail to execute.
Paper Tigers IMO until they prove otherwise.
As stated in other threads, the recent hot 3point shooting overall and Bal and O’Neil seemingly emerging from their lengthy slumps just masked other areas of weakness.
Hopefully some soul searching will occur amongst players and coaching staff pronto…if you can’t be honest with yourself with who you are and have been then you aren’t going to address problems and weaknesses and improve. True in life and sports.
I’ve proclaimed the 2024/25 season a total bust based on the preseason hype. Only a miracle of sorts could resurrect this season which to date has been a debacle from both a player and coaching perspective. Sendek is into this 8th season which corresponds with his tenure at Arizona State when he received his walking papers…
