WCC Game 2: @USF (Game 15)

We’ve become a rudderless ship with the “crew” I.e. roster fending for themselves and their stats. The captain is looking through rose colored binoculars and thinking the “process” of doing the same things will work.
The mistakes are freshman like, not like veterans who have played nearly 50 games together in this system.

This “process” has produced a lot of wins but only 1 conference title in his 30+ years of college Bball. We now know why….

There is a lot of doom and gloom among all of us following last night’s game, and justifiably so, but what would we be saying had Tilly made his free throw? I agree that the defense was poor, but offensively we hung 94 (86 in reg) on a Don’s team with excellent D numbers.

There continues to be too much 1:1 action, with Bal being the primary culprit, but our assist numbers (16 on 32 makes) were equivalent to the Don’s (18 on 34).

There are still a lot of games to be played among the 2 thru 6 teams before this thing sorts itself out. And one last point, note that Pepp was only down 4 to GU with 1 min to go last night.

Having said all that, I wholeheartedly concur with most of what has been written in the last 22 hours.

Happy New Year everyone, and thanks for the always cogent and lively discussion on this board.

Easy…I’d say “we were lucky to win this game tonight, if we don’t start getting our sh*t together and play some defense and run some semblance of an offense that doesn’t include cold-hand players jacking up 3s when Carlos was consistently able to drive, penetrate and finish at the rim AT WILL, then we aren’t going to even sniff a tournament bid.”

Unfortunately many of those 3 point attempts were by Carlos who ended the game 1/7 from beyond the arc

And Tilly was 1/5 from 3.
But for me it’s less about the total shooting results and more the timing of the attempts (and in this case all misses).
The final possession of regulation the game was tied and we had the ball w/ 15secs…instead of setting up a play for an interior bucket, or Stewart driving and hopefully getting a layup for a shooting foul, we run no offense and settle for Carlos’ 25 ft 3pointer. Keep in mind Carlos just had two driving layups in the last several minutes. And then Carlos settles for two more missed 3pointers in regulation.

And while I don’t mind Tilly taking a couple of 3’s a game, I don’t like the 3’s he took (and missed) in OT. Game was tied or one possession at those times…a 3pointer from 7’ center after he’s played 30+ minutes and probably doesn’t have his legs is just not the shots you want. Time and score/game situation matters in decision making and in crunch time I want see more attacking the basket, post-ups, etc. with kick-outs for 3pointers as the Plan B instead of the relying on 3’s as the primary option.

Seems the BEST motivation was taking O’Neils spot. He’s fought his way back. Maybe try the same with Adama and Tilly? I’d even pull Stewart and get him to learn to utilize the pick and roll and go TO THE SCREEN - not away from it.

The only real PG out there is BK.

Can you say: coaching is needed boys and girls?

I’m a little late sharing this, but our friend running the Santa Clara Basketball Podcast put a pretty cogent analysis of the USF game together:
