Jalen Draft Process

-Nashty- I believe you’re right, don’t think we’ve had anyone leave early. But outside of GU, it’s also very uncommon for the WCC as a whole. I may be forgetting a guy or two but the only I can recall who left prior to 4 years in college are: Pepp’s Kessler Edwards last season, SMC’s Patty Mills. BYU has had a couple (ie- Mika) but hard to include guys like him in this conversation as he had gone on a 2-yr mission and was like 22 or 23 when he turned pro…even though he had eligibility remaining, can’t truly view him as ‘leaving early’ given his age.

Does Quentin Dailey bringing down USFs entire program in a crumbling heap to the point of disbandment, and leaving after 3 seasons count? That’s the only other one that comes to mind, lol.

Nash allegedly toyed with the idea, I thought I heard.

I also think Dennis Johnson could have played another year at Pepperdine, but that’s ancient history. Doug Christie maybe left after 3?

It feels like alternate history that Pepperdine was ever that good…

Around 21 seconds into the video on the post above, you can see Jerry West and Tom Thibodeau standing together and watching Jalen rather closely.

Would you count Willie Caruso going pro in Italy as a case? Obviously we don’t care as much about it because it’s not the NBA. I can honestly see Podz and Carlos Stewart as potential NBA prospects. It’ll be cool if we can potentially make this a trend every two to three years. It’ll help with recruiting.

Maybe Stewart if he blows up over the next 2 years.
Podz…don’t think he has the athleticism…even as a 3pt shooting specialist you have to be able to defend at least a little at that level.

This mock draft from NBA Draft Room has Jalen at the 18th pick to the Chicago Bulls.

Lots of mock drafts out there, some more credible than others, don’t know this one’s ‘credentials’.

Regardless…#18 would be great plus a decent team and organization in the Bulls. I’d rather he go there than the Hornets at 13 & 15 or Knicks at 11. The difference in $ from say pick 10 to pick 20 isn’t that significant. And not downplaying the significance of the $5M+ that comes with a guaranteed 1st round pick rookie contract but the ‘real’ money comes in the 2nd contract if the player does well in those first 3 to 4 seasons. In order to make that happen you want to end up in a decent organization where you have an opportunity to develop, not one that is in a state of flux or constant rebuild mode with a revolving door of coaches/staffs.

The Ringer has Jalen at 21.

Pretty awesome.

The Jalen Williams story. A good read.

Great story and puts him and SCU in a very good light.

What a tremendous story! It indeed puts Jalen and the program in a good light.

Great read, briefly mentions his younger brother Cody - who is getting more and more attention by the day by plenty of second tier power 5 schools. He’s a rising junior and would be a huge get for us.

Good write up. Kind of begs the question many of us were thinking during much of last season. If Sendek and the staff knew how good JWil was why didn’t they make him the overwhelming offensive focus?

I felt like almost every outing I came away thinking get JWil more shots. What was Sendek attempting to accomplish going away from JWil (especially down on the blocks to Josip)?

Was previously reported that Jalen received a green room invite but I don’t see him on the list of green room invitees near the bottom of the above article…I do see Mark Williams from Duke, maybe the Williams’ got confused.

Based on chatter and mock drafts I’ve seen, I’m going to guess Jalen at #18 to Chicago or #21 - Denver. Primarily just hope he lands with a decent franchise, with stable leadership and prospects to be decent.

There are several teams with multiple 1st round picks so I expect a lot of draft day trades to move up/down.

Would selfishly love to see him in Denver. Maybe he’ll come to our alumni events out here

I will be watching tonight to see how it all shakes out.

And who my Sacramento Kings pick (this year is somewhat representative of my dad’s axiom – the Sacramento King’s pick = the number of “can’t miss” prospects + 1).

Vegas thinks Jalen will end up 16.

Under 16.5 is juiced while O15.5 is juiced.

For whatever the hell that is worth

I saw that as well but I have also seen his name on the list as apparently they invited in stages and he is on it.
