WCC Game 9: vs. USD

This team has had a problem with turnovers since day 1 of this season, and has had a history of slow starts. He’s known these things and hasn’t cleaned them up.

Haha all you can do is laugh at two straight off rebounds on that stretch and we walk away with nothing.

I know they are college kids but something is very wrong with this team. I have not blamed the coach but maybe he is to blame for some strategic moves many of you point out. However, the “what team will show up” and the will to win vs the talent to win has been a recurring theme. Blow out losses to Ohio State and New Mexico, losses to SJS, Cal, and Yale and now tonight tops it off. I cant understand how we can be so Jeckel and Hyde. I do question the mental toughness and will to win on the players. Turnovers are one result of this and losses to clearly bad teams is inexcusable. Maybe time to sit some people and play some walk ons. I’m ranting but I am pi###ed off.

Every bubble team Santa Clara beat is going to be angry after this one.

The analytics rankings have not thought much of our team all season and it quite simply comes down to the numbers saying we are going to lose the turnover battle almost every game.

USD for the season is an even worse with TO’s yet we’re -8 TO’s.

As bad as we played, we did have a 3pt lead mid second half…I thought at that point we’d cleaned a few things up and maybe we could pull away to win by 10. Instead…couldn’t do anything right and lose by 11 to USD team where half their rotation is 18/19 yrs old…SMH.

And the slow starts are a huge problem…4 times now in 3 weeks (both SMC’s, Pepp, now USD)…guys need to show up ready to play, they apparently prefer to ease in to the game.

Wow…Broncos out rebound USD by more than 20, yet lose by 11???

4 of 29 from three…This team is “probably” looking at the #4 seed and I really wouldn’t be surprised seeing them get bounced in the first round of the conference tournament. This team has the talent to make some noise, but they look so flat and chaotic for long stretches.

Bad loss tonight!

Tongues turnovers were all offensive fouls. I am SO sick and tired of him being penalized for playing tough. And it’s a stupid rule to double penalize with a foul and TO.

He played ten mins and had 6 pts and 7 boards. Keep on that track for 40 mins it’s a hot night.

Yea. The guys need to mentally overcome. But it’s hard when it’s a tight game on one side and generous game on opposite.

Player throws ball away, travels, it gives opponent possession thus a turnover.
Player commits offensive foul, it gives opponent possession thus a turnover. Doubt USD could care less a foul was called, what they did care about is they gained possessions

It’s weak to claim that there’s a fix, refs are to blame, etc…Are there bad calls through out every game? Sure, no question but to claim that’s the reason the Broncos lost is ludicrous.

As Jerry B pointed out with the stats:

3 point shooting and turnovers were numbers that translate into a LOSS.

Period.

I’m upset because the entire TEAM and COACHES had a bad game, losing a home game to a bottom tier team in the WCC and a net ranking of +200 by 11, yes 11 is totally unacceptable. Could care less what individual players do, i do care how the TEAM plays.

If you asked the 15 teams we defeated this season, Im sure all will say they got screwed by the refs. Let’s keep this a SCU Bronco discussion and not a 7th grade AAU/NJB parent rant page

Deflating. If herb can’t capitalize this off-season in the portal w 3 straight nba picks, the seat is getting warm.

That was the first win by one of the bottom 5 teams over one of the top 4.

And, when measured against the spread, that was the most significant upset of league play so far.

We didn’t want to be part of either of the above.

that was gross in every sense, tyeree being out hurt but 20 TO’s, 4/29 from 3, and adama and chef being 3/16 just will not win basketball games

Given the history of very slow starts, I don’t understand why HS doesn’t start off games aggressively on defense to force turnovers. We are decent at capitalizing on turnovers. Start the game in a heavy press, don’t let opponents get into rhythm early.

On the other side, I’ll say that Lavin is doing a good job. He could’ve taken the easy route and brought in a bunch of mature transfers, but instead he’s brought in a lot of young recruits. It’ll be fun to see what the Toreros look like in 2025-26.

What an embarrassment.

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that this team came out as flat as week-old roadkill, but they had a nice run to end the half. Honestly, I was quite confident at halftime— they dominated on the boards, and I figured the shooting (4/15 on 3’s) could only get better.

They started the second half strong, and by the 11:00 mark they had a 49-46 lead and looked poised to take control of the game and put it away. The rebounding was so dominant I didn’t think it was possible to lose at that point— hell, they collected more offensive boards than SD had defensive rebounds.

We all know what happened, a 24-10 run the rest of the way and the worst loss of the season. It was painful to watch, 20 turnovers and an amazing 0-14 from 3 in the second half. The awful shooting reminded me of many games from the DD and KK era. There aren’t many nights when this team is so cold, but tonight was one, and I can’t credit SD’s defense: the Broncos missed open 3’s as well as a number of shots around the rim.

But if poor shooting isn’t characteristic of this squad, poor passing certainly is. This is as sloppy a passing team as I can remember seeing here, and at this point in the season I’m not at all confident that will change. I get no satisfaction out of saying this, but this team plays worse than the sum of its parts.

STOP bounce passing the ball to big men in the past- they can’t catch low balls. Broncos are not the Warriors- don’t need five passes to shoot- if your in the key, SHOOT THE BALL.

I am also a Grand Canyon fan. Former Phoenix Sun player Dan Majerle was their coach for 7 years and had 4-20 win seasons but never reached the NCAA tourney, He was replaced by Bryce Drew four years ago and he has won two WAC Tourney titles and the Lopes are 21-2 this season.

Broncos may need a coaching change.

At 4o minutes it’s a triple double with 13 turnovers. To blame this performance on the referees is downright ludicrous and to be honest embarrassing. If discussions are about rule changes then this board has really lost sight of its purpose.
