WCC Tourney Game 2: vs. SMC

Femme, a couple tough calls, I agree. But… we were manhandled. The quality of shots they got versus ours are night and day. Can’t blame the officials for the loss.

I have to agree with Midwest. The tape of this game will highlight Bals shortcomings. I’d have to think he has slid to late 2nd round or out completely. There is just too many holes in his game and in his biggest game of his career he was flat. Hopefully he is back next season so he can continue to build and improve.

Soft. No passion, no drive. Second half is embarrassing. Like someone said where is drew zurek or Travis neisen

I’m starting to think that we might NEVER ever ever again get back to the Big Dance. I’m not sure what is more depressing, that this sentiment might be accurate or that it has taken me 28 years of futility to finally realize it.

I vote that we start practice next year with some box out drills.

I think that’s a bit despairing. The recipe was there this season because the schedule was solid and some of the wins came, but bad losses tanked it. If Vrankic doesn’t get mono in 2021-22, it might have happened with Jalen/Josip/Keshawn. Podz needed a better #2 option and basically willed SCU to 20 wins. But then if Podz doesn’t go pro, he might have been the difference with this team which desperately needed a floor general.

That’s a lot of what ifs, and it’s the wrong night for optimism. But I don’t think SCU came that close once in KK’s whole tenure or much of later Dick Davey. The path has been there the last three years. But it’s a razor walk for a team like SCU, and they’re going to fail a lot more often than not until they reach the next level.

This team was short an identity all season. That rests on the coaches. But if some continuity doesn’t create that identity for next year, I might join some of the folks looking for big changes.

As Sean Farnham said, St. Mary’s plays for the name on the front of the Jersey not the name on the back…It shows…Not just tonight…

Just hate going out playing so crappy…on national TV no less.
If Marshall wasn’t on fire and to a lesser degree Hammond, it would have been really, really ugly…the other 7 guys scored a total of 26pts.
If you knew nothing about the Broncos and that was the first Bronco game you watched, you’d question whether Bal was a legit D1 player, NBA wouldn’t be even a remote consideration. And Bal wilted against SMC…24pts in 3 games, 8pts/game, and half those points were in the last 5 mins of the 2nd game were he made a bunch of desperation circus shots. SMC completely neutralized him and exposed his weaknesses.

On a more positive note…happy for Marshall that his shots were falling and he had a good night in his last collegiate game.

And maybe that was a coming out party for Hammond. Made his floaters, finished at the rim and played decent D. He was a highly regarded 3pt shooter in HS but shot just 18% on 3’s in limited attempts. If he can rediscover his shot, he can be a threat and solid contributor next season.

Didnt we lose badly last year too? Thought it was one of Podz worse games too. Guy he had lit us up. Thought it would hurt his draft rankings.

I recalled us getting blown out in 2nd OT but it wasn’t as bad as I was recalling. Guess it just felt that way.

I’m not blaming officials for the loss. I’m bothered that the refs ALWAYS allow St Marys to play more aggressive than anyone else.

We lost in 2OT to usf, podz had a good game but jacked up two straight bad shots on buzzer beaters at the end of regulation and single OT

That’s what coaching is all about, making the team greater than the sum of all the individual parts.
Herb hasn’t done that in any of his seasons at SCU.

Why did it feel like Shabazz dropped a whole lot more in OT for the win?

I’ll probably come up with a better full season write up later on, but it was a season full of transfers that never really seemed to click.

They did give us a win over Gonzaga which was a long time coming and much needed.

For better or perhaps worse, our expectations have been notched up for the last 2-3 years.

Sorry I meant he missed twice on really bad decisions

No, KK was never close. But the facilities & commitment to athletics changed SIGNIFICANTLY after this time.

Not trying to defend KK and his X’s and O’s, I don’t need to watch the 3 man weave and getting into half court sets with :10 left in the shot clock, but we must be fair.

I thought Marshall, Hammond, and Tilley played well. Bal was terrible with many air balls. O’Neil a non-factor. Both had good games against USD but not tonight when we needed everyone to contribute. We got out-physicaled and pushed around and out rebounded. I still see us heading in the right direction but it’s taking far longer than I would like to get there. Getting older and not sure I’ll see us make it to the promised land. Hope we can keep our players and get a point guard for next year. The injuries hurt particularly Knept. Tired of taking crap from SMC and USF alums. NEXT YEAR. GO BRONCOS!!!

Shoutout Marshall and Hammond for fighting so tough man. Lots of raw emotion from my broadcasting team too, but SMC just takes a mile when you give an inch of inconsistency. And as we’ve seen, we shoot ourselves in the foot as a hobby. A systematic win for SMC. Just need a floor general to get people settled like a Tommy Kuhse (yuck).

Despite that, giving up 3 o boards after missed FT’s is heinous. Doesn’t matter who or who isn’t on the floor. 3 straight 20 win seasons is nothing to scoff at and I’m glad I could help tell the story of this team and the women’s team this year with you all

Presser with Herb below. He fielded some real questions and provided somewhat more sophisticated answers than his usual coachisms (not much, but a little).

A few observations, hopefully without sounding repetitive.

Marshall: He probably had his finest game as a Bronco and did everything he could to keep us in it.

Hammond: Definitely his finest game and feel very encouraged for what’s to come. He passed well and looked to score.

Bal: Worst game of the year! Forced so many shots and pretty much absent all around. I don’t see him being drafted either as others pointed out. Can his performance be attributed to NBA scouts in attendance?

Femme: I hope Cam returns for his senior season. He plays with energy, physicality, and is a capable scorer. I think he is also the best Bronco post defender.

Herb/Portal: Point Guard needed

Lastly, I’d like to think we’re getting closer to punching a ticket to the dance. It’s mind boggling to think that the Zags will be playing in their 26th or 27th conference title game. It’s both incredibly impressive and embarrassing depending on your perspective.

Thanks to everyone on this board too! Appreciate everyone’s comments whether we all agree or not, we ALL have tremendous passion for the program.

GO BRONCOS!!!
